Its design, however, must be such that it incorporates a high percentage of free area in order to permit relatively Unrestricted flow of downcoming liquid, and in most 88S, easy upward flow of gas. This is very important ce flooding at the support plate will often lead to pre- mature flooding of the entire bed The support plate must also be designed to permit easy installation. It must be constructed of a material that will withstand the corrosive environment in the column, and its design must be capable of redistributing the liquid as well as adaptable to construction from many materials. The first packing supports were flat plates that were perforated or slotted to permit gas and liquid flow. ‘These plates were heavy, and in spite of the fact that they had only 15 to 25 percent free area, they had insufficient strength to support tall beds. Flat plates have two distinct disadvantages. One, since both liquid and gas must pass counter-currently through the same holes, a substantial hydrostatic head develops. ‘on top ofthe plate even at low liquid rates (see illustra tion). Two, the bottom layer of packing blocks or partially blocks many of the openings making the free Space ineffective. Both of these conditions reduce tower capacity The development of high performance packings created a need for more advanced type plates and the “gas- injection” support plate was developed. LL GAS INJECTION SUPPORT PLATES are designed to pro- vide separate passageways for gas and liquid so that they ‘need not vie for passage through the same opening. This is done by providing gas inlets to the packed bed at a point above the level where liquid flows from the bed (see illustration). This prevents build-up of a substantial hydrostatic head. With the gas-injection plate shown near the top of the illustration, the gas is injected upward into the packing through openings in the sides of the beam-type risers. Liquid flows downward through the openings in the base of the plate to provide uniform distribution into the packing below. With the flat plate shown in the lower half of the tower, openings are often obstructed, gas and liquid vie for passage through the same openings and distribution to the bed below is uneven, Free space in some gas-injection support plates actually, exceeds 100 percent of the column cross-sectional area. But more important, these plates maintain greater effective free space during operation, even at high liquid and gas rates. SELECTING THE PROPER SUPPORT PLATE Selection of the correct support plate for each specific, application not only requires a thorough knowledge of the gas and liquid handling properties of each design; but the process. The tower diameter, the number and height of the packed beds, the type of packing, the tower con- struction materials, and the gas and liquid rates to be used must also be taken into consideration. In addition, corrosive conditions and sometimes weight factors dictate the support plate construction material. The capacity and efficiency of a tower can be greatly affected by the choice of a single tower internal. For assistance in the selection of the most effective tower internals for any application, contact your nearest Norton Chemical Process Products Division sales office. Our sales personnel know the advantages and operational limitations of various tower internals, and their recom- mendations will be based on performance data that have been developed in our own laboratories and by actual ‘operation in production size towers. It provides the ultimate in performance and should be considered, except for very special applications, for all tower |.D.'s 4 feet and larger. The design of the perforated beams provides greater gas and liquid handling capacity than units with individual risers. Standard units provide free area in excess of 100 per: cent, and can be used with liquid rates up to 80 epmisq, ft. Modified units can be provided for higher liquid rates. These support plates are designed to develop high capacity, utilize wide gas injection ports and are recommended for use with large size packings. If you wish to use packing smaller than 114" size, contact our nearest field sales office for recommendations. ‘The individual beam type construction permits the Model 804 support plate to be installed through 16" 1.D. ‘manways. The new design also has an increased section ‘modulus which provides improved load bearing capacity. Refinements in the design of gas injection support plates have achieved great improvements in tower per- formance. Note the graph. Our original Model 804 plate is still widely copied, however design changes have put the new Model 804’ in a performance class by itself. Although differing very slightly in appearance the new plate will handle rates up to five times as high as the original Mode! 804. For instance, the new design will hhandie liquid rates of 40,000 Ibs./sq. ft/hr. at a gas. rate of 1,000 Ibs./sq. ft./hr. while maintaining pressure drop of less than 0.25" of water. Copies are hard pressed to cope with liquid rates of only 8,000 Ibs./sq. ftulhr. at the same gas loading and pressure drop. Pid | ae cas eat uns /FE on MAXIMUM LOADING — The allowable loading, without mid-span supports, for support plates of standard con: figuration and metal thickness are shown by material and tower I.D. in the table below. The load carrying capacity of standard plates can be increased by reducing the free span through the use of mid span supports. If this is not practical, greater loads can be accommodated either by design modifications to the standard construction or by fabricating the plates from heavier metal. Modifications of the Mode! 804 are available for both light duty applications and extra-heavy-duty applications such as catalyst beds. When plates are needed to handle greater loads or for use in larger towers, consult our nearest field sales office for our specific recommendations. If the packing is not held down, and breakage ‘occurs, the broken packing tends to restrict free space. This causes further reduction in capacity and ultimately may completely destroy the packing. A hold-down plate rests directly on the packed bed, and by virtue of its weight, restricts movement of the packing below. How- ‘ever, if a major tower upset were to occur, the hold- down plate would not be of sufficient weight tocompletely prevent damage. Ideally, hold-down plates should be designed with slots or grids that are small enough to prevent the passage of individual pieces of packing. This is not always possible, since the plate must be designed with a high percent of free area — at least 70 percent as much free area as the packing with which it is used. Where corrosion or fouling is not a problem, a lightweight mesh can be used Under the hold-down plate to prevent the passage of packing without reducing free area appreciably. BED-LIMITERS When metal or plastic packing are used in a tower, bed: miter is used to prevent the expansion of the packed bed when operating at high pressure drops. Metal or plastic packing cannot be ground or crushed when the acking becomes fluidized; however, because of their lightweight, they can be easily carried out ofthe tower if not retained. Bed:limiters of metal or plastic are generally designed with a mesh backing to prevent the passage of individual pieces of packing. Bec-limiters should always be fastened to the column wall. They may be suspended on threaded rods from the liquid distributor or the support ledge above, Alternately, they may be fastened by bolting to clips welded to the tower wall. Abeetimiter will occasionally pass an individual piece of packing. If this presents a problem, a lightweight mesh can be used under the plate to’ prevent this from occurring. 2.0 : LEZ wie 925 Metal Hold-Down Plate 18” — 4712” The Model 925 Metal hold-down plate, resting directly on the packing, exerts sufficient static pressure to restrict ‘movement of the packing. The plate may be installed with limiterclips, but must not be fastened tothe column wall The hold-down plate is backed by screen or expanded metal and will retain 1° or larger packing. Generally, absorption and stripping towers require only one distributor, while continuous distillation towers require at least two liquid distributors. ‘The distributor should be located at the top of the packed bed at a height 6” to 12" above the packing. This provides sufficient free gas space in the column to allow for gas dis-engagement from the bed prior to passing through the distributor. An ideal liquid distributor should (1) Uniform liquid distribu- tion, (2) Resistance to plugging and fouling, (3) High turn- down ratio, (4) High free area for gas flow, (5) Adapt- ability to fabrication from many materials of construc- tion, and (6) Sectional construction for installation through manways THE IMPORTANCE OF SELECTING A GOOD LIQUID DISTRIBUTOR ‘The following tests, conducted in our laboratory, il- lustrate the importance of good liquid distribution in a tower. For test purposes, the base of the column was divided, by three concentric rings, into four equal areas as shown in Figure 1. Liquid, after passing through the Packed bed, was collected in the base of the column and accurately measured. 4 GPM per square foot to the tower. As can be seen by Figure 2, distribution was extremely poor. Over 67% of the flow was confined to the center one-quarter of the tower while the outer one-quarter handled less than 7% of the flow. When a four-point liquid distributor was used at an identical flow rate, distribution was greatly improved as shown by Figure 3 DISTRIBUTION WITH OME POINT DISTRIBUTOR ‘GPM /SQUARE FOOT DISTRIBUTION WITH FOUR-POINT DISTRIBUTOR FLOW: 4 GPM/SQUARE FOOT SECTION A 8 c D When these tests were repeated at twice the liquid rate (8 GPM per square foot), only slight improvement in distribution was achieved with a one-point distributor as shown in Figure 4. ‘Again at a liquid rate of 8 GPM per square foot the four-point distributor (Figure 5) proved more effective than one-point distribution; however, even such distribu- tion is far from adequate for maximum tower efficiency. The use of four-point distributor in.a 30° diameter column represents less than one distribution point per square foot. To assure peak performance, most Norton, liquid distributors are designed to provide approximately four distribution points per square foot. DISTRIBUTION WITH ONE-POINT DISTRIBUTOR FLOW: 8 GPM/SQUARE FOOT ‘SECTION A 8 c > DISTRIBUTION WITH FOUR-POINT DISTRIBUTOR FLOW: 8 GPM/SQUARE FOOT SECTION A 8 © D DISTRIBUTOR DESIGN Two basic types of distributors are commonly used: orifice type and weir type. Both are gravity devices. High pressure drop devices are not generally used be- cause the fine particle spray they produce is too easily entrained in the rising gas stream. Because of the small orifices in such devices, they are also easily plugged by dirty or fouling liquids. Orifice type distributors are available in two basic de- signs: pan or ladder styles. The ladder type has a high amount of free area for gas flow and provides very Uniform liquid distribution over the entire tower cross section. It can be fabricated from any metal or plastic that can be made into pipe, and is available in sectional construction. Orifice type distributors have relatively low turn-dowin ratios. They are not recommended for liquids that solidify at ambient temperatures. In small diameter towers it is often more convenient to use a pan type orifice distributor. Here, the liquid is fed to the center of the plate and builds @ uniform head over all of the orifices. This plate does not have as high {ree area for gas flow as the ladder type. It is available in metal, ceramic, F.R.P., and thermo-plastics. The most widely used distributor for packed towers is, the weir type which is non-fouling and offers a high turn-down ratio. It is available in both pan and trough designs. The pan style weir-flow distributor has approximately the same free area for gas flow as does the pan orifice type. It is available in metals and ceramic. Forlarger diameter towers, a trough-style weir distributor is recommended. This design offers high free area. The troughs and parting boxes are individual pieces to facil tate installation through manways. It provides both high turn-down ratios and excellent resistance to fouling. It should be used where the liquid stream contains solids, or will solidify at ambient temperatures Liquid distributors may be supported on a continuous ledge, or in the case of pan style and ladder style units, they may also be supported on saddles. The absence of weight on the distributor often requires that they be bolted to the support ledge to prevent mis- alignment during column upsets. Where low liquid rates are to be handled by weir type distributors the use of leveling screws is recommended, particularly on larger diameter towers, The flow rates shown in the following tables apply to liquid viscosities of 10 centipoise or less. Contact our field sales office for recommendations above 10 centi poise. Model 845 Metal Orifice-Type Distributor 6” — 4712” The oritice-type distributor is adaptable to a wide range of flow rates by varying the size and number of the orifices in the pan. The table shows the minimum and maximum flow rates that can be designed into a nominal tower I.D. These figures do not represent the “flow range” of the distributor. The distributor can be designed to provide for any liquid rate range that falls within these minimum and maximum limits, PROVIDING THE TURN: DOWN RATIO IS NO MORE THAN 4:1. The pan is supported by three equally spaced lugs on ‘one-piece plates: four, on two-piece plates: and six on three-piece plates. The lugs raise the pan above the distributor support ledge to provide an annular space between the distributor and the column wall. Gas rises partially through the annular space and partially through the risers. This distributor is to be center fed, 2" to 8° above the rim of the pan. Maximum feed velocity is 10 ft/sec. The distributor is not available with corrosion, allowance. LE Model 806 Metal Weir-Trough Distributor 36” & Larger The weirtrough is the most versatile distributor that ‘we manufacture. It incorporates a compound weir design, that enables it to handle effectively an extremely wide range of liquid flow requirements. It is particularly ‘effective in large towers when large volumes of gas and liquid are handled ‘The weir-trough distributor consists of a series of closed end troughs. Liquid is fed proportionately to one or more parting boxes and thence to the troughs. The number of parting boxes required is a function of tower diameter and liquid flow. Model 806 distributors are designed to provide any liquid rate range that falls within the minimum and maximum limits shown in the table, PROVIDING THE TURN-DOWN RATIO IS NOT MORE THAN 4 TO 1. The distributor will provide flows shown in the table regardless of the fluid density ALL PARTING BOXES MUST BE SPARGE FED WHEN STANDARD CONSTRUCTION IS USED. SPARGE FEED. (Although not shown in the drawing, when distributors require three parting boxes the third box is located on the tower centerline.) Since the Model 806 distributor operates by gravity overflow through weirs, it is quite resistant to fouling and can handle large volumes of suspended solids in the liquid. Its self-cleaning and non-fouling characteristics enable it to function efficiently during start-up even when, liquids with freezing points higher than ambient tem- perature are being processed. Distributors through 120” tower 1.D. do not require midspan supports, however supports must be provided for larger sizes. Ll Model 844 Metal Ladder Type Distributor 1744” & Larger This Model 844, ladder-type distributor is designed primarily for use where feed liquid under pressure is available and where the minimum liquid rate normally would not fall to less than 40 percent of the maximum. Itis particularly effective where high gas mass velocities are encountered in packed beds and where net free space in excess of 70% is necessary to prevent localized flooding. The number, size, and placement of the orifices are determined by the liquid rate and range specified This distributor should be used only with clean liquids or with a filter designed to remove any particles that could block the orifices. Maximum liquid rate should not exceed 10 gpmisq. ft. Such rates provide good low velocity, distribution. At higher liquid rates, distribution is ad- versely affected by the liquid being injected as a high velocity jet causing considerable splashing and misting. Its recommended that the distributor be located 6" to 8” above the top of the packed bed. CONSTRUCTION — The laterals on metal distributors are threaded to permit installation and assembly into the header inside the tower. Distributors are designed with flanged header sections for easy passage through man ways and assembly. Flanged horizontal feed from the side of the tower is standard; however, flanged vertical center feed or threaded header is available on special order. The necessary support saddles and the interior flange must be provided by the user. The header will be a two-piece flanged construction when the weight of the header pipe exceeds 200 pounds. All flanges are drilled to 150 pound ASA standards with bolt holes straddling centerlines. Although standard con- struction utilizes threaded laterals, all flanged construc: tion can be furnished on special order. This distributor is not available with corrosion allowance. They are raised above the support ledge by three lugs in order to provide an annular space between the distributor and the tower wall for increased, {gas passage area. Three spacers are provided to center the plates in the column. Cylindrical risers with "V" weirs are used as downcomers for the liquid thus permitting greater flow as the head increases. Drip grooves at the base of each riser help maintain uniform distribution to the bed below. For towers where support saddles are used instead of support rings, provisions should be made for 142" wide lugs. Maximum liquid rates shown in table are for gas rates, equivalent to an Fs of 1.0. Maximum liquid rates are reduced at higher gas rates. This distributor is to be center fed, 2° to 8" above the rim of the pan. Maximum feed velocity is 10 ft/sec. CONSTRUCTION — Mode! 2014 and Model 4014 are identical except for material of construction. Model 2014 is made of white unglazed porcelain; Model 4014 of Aludur alumina ceramic. The corrosion resistance of Aludur at elevated tem- peratures exceeds that of high quality chemical porcelain. It performs safely at temperatures at which other ceramics lose chemical resistance when used with strong corrosives. This once again makes that portion of the liquid, which has collected on the column wall, available for mass-transfer. The redistributor also corrects the coal- escence of down-coming liquid which occurs even with the most efficient type packing. The purpose of the redistributor is to eliminate factors which cause a loss of efficiency in the tower, and to re-establish a uniform pattern of liquid irrigation. ‘The design criteria for a redistributor are similar to those for an initial liquid distributor, but in addition the re- distributor must be compatible with the support plate under which it is located. The drawing below illustrates the use of a gas-injection support plate in combination with a redistributor. The alignment of the gas risers in the redistributor with those in the support plate prevents liquid entering the gas passages and provides minimum pressure drop. surrort Pate surpoer LE0GES. (SuPPUED sv CUSTOMER) fs uawio i WALL WIPERS are a special class of tower internal often referred to as redistributors. They are generally required in packed towers when tower efficiency is being reduced due to a large percentage of liquid flowing down the column wall. This problem occurs most often in small diameter towers. A wall wiper should also be considered in new tower construction when the bottom product must be completely stripped of volatile components. Wall wipers may be used at virtually any point within ‘packed tower — within the bed, above the packing or ‘above ordinary distributors. Their principal function is to remove liquid from the column wall and transport it to the interior of the bed. Wall wipers may be gasketed to the column wall or installed between flanged sections of the column. 4.0 | oy Model 858 Metal “Rosette” Redistributor 4” — 24” (OPTIONAL INSTALLATION _————————— MODEL 858 “ROSETTE” METAL REDISTRIBUTOR ‘The Model 858, a rosette type, wall-wiper redistributor, is an effective answer to redistribution problems in small columns. It provides five (5) important advantages: higher liquid handling capacity, elimination of wall “steaming,” non-fouling design, greater spacing between redistributors and a constant percentage of free space regardless of tower diameter. The Model 858 “rosette’ redistributor is a great improve- ment over the plain wall wiper which, in order to transport the liquid a minimum of three inches from the wall in a 24” I.D. column, blocked more than 40 percent of the cross-sectional area. The rosette-type wall wiper, by contrast, maintains 72 percent free area regardless of tower diameter. With the Model 858, liquid flowing down the tower wall is deflected onto the projections and toward the grooved tips from which it flows into the column. Liquid falling from the tip strikes a geometric mean cross section making the area on both sides equal. This assures more uniform distribution to the bed below. This redistributor must be sealed to the tower wall. The standard Model 858 is furnished with a Teflon-asbestos sealing strip to permit its use anywhere within the column, If installation is to be made between the flanges of adjoining tower sections, specify ‘between flange mounting." It will then be furnished with a flange to permit this method of installation. Model 834 Metal Liquid-Liquid Disperser Support Plate 12” — Larger The Model 834 is designed for use in liquid-liquid extractors employing tower packing, It can be used in a number of ways: (1) At the bottom of the column it functions both as a packing support and as a disperser plate for dispersing the light phase. (2) Placed at inter- mediate points in the column (6 ft. to 12 ft. apart), the plate serves as a re-support and a re-disperser thus correcting the tendency of the dispersed phase to coalesce and become quiescent as packed depth increases. (3) A special version of this plate placed at the top of the column can be used to disperse the heavy phase when it is desired to have the light phase continuous. In this event, the packing in the bottom bed can be supported by a Model 804 or 818 support plate. When used as a combination support and disperser plate, the dispersed phase enters the bed through the orifices in the deck of the plate. These orifices are sized to assure that the injection velocity of the dispersed phase will not become excessive. The continuous phase leaves the packed bed through the risers without dis- turbing the dispersed phase entering through the orifices. ‘The plate functions well in all systems including those in which the continuous phase has suspended solids or tends to form sludge. 5.0 Model 834 Metal ...: CAPACITY — The capacity of the Model 834 is dependent con the physical properties of the two liquids. Plates are specially designed for each combination of fluids. Com- plete flow rates and physical properties of both phases must be specified on the order. Standard dispersed phase flow rates are shown in the table. NOTE — The standard Model 834 is designed for dis- persion of the light phase. If you wish to disperse the heavy phase, please note this information on the order and a special version will be supplied. IMPORTANT - Where the continuous phase is introduced into the column, a special Model 844 ladder type distributor should be used — a single point feed is not sufficient. Unless the continuous phase is properly distributed, bypassing can take place between the con- tinuous and dispersed phases. This causes a reduction in mass transfer efficiency which is particularly evident as the ratio of the continuous phase to the dispersed phase becomes small MAXIMUM LOADING — The maximum allowable load on the plate is 400 Ibs./sq. ft WHEN ORDERING OR INQUIRING, consult the check list on the inside back cover for design data that, must be supplied. CHEMICAL CERAMICS Chemical ceramic formulations used in the manufacture of tower internals must fulfill several or all of these requirements: mf Sufficient mechanical strength to carry the load; m Thermal shock resistance to withstand sudden and possibly extreme temperature changes; and i Resistance to the chemicals with which they will be used. Aludur and white unglazed chemical porcelain, standard materials used in many types of Norton tower internals, fulfil these requirements best. ALUDUR is an alumina ceramic body. Its mechani- cal strength is considerably greater than that of the best chemical porcelain. Its corrosion resist- ance at elevated temperatures equals or exceeds that of high quality chemical porcelain. It will also stand up wel at temperatures at which large shapes. made of chemical porcelain cannot be used. Aludur tower internals have replaced expensive metals and alloys in many instances. CHEMICAL PORCELAIN provides excellent per- formance even under severe corrosive conditions in applications where temperatures do not exceed 230°- 240°F, and where sudden changes in tem- peratures can be avoided. Although the majority of ceramic, brick-lined and glass-lined columns are equipped with chemical porcelain internals, many designers are specifying ALUDUR when concen- trated acids and elevated temperatures are in- volved, or where higher safety factors are desired. METALS Metal tower internals described in this Engineering. Manual can be fabricated from any weldable metal or alloy which is available in wrought form.
