Impacts of Flooding

Duration
40 mins

Prior knowledge of learners (What do they already know?)

Flood is caused by excess water from heavy rainfall
Local community is impacted by flooding roads cut off, houses damaged etc
Flood waters travel and are measured in peaks
Lesson objective/s
Students to explore the issue and impacts of flooding through investigation and
problem solving using various ICT
Evidence of learning
Students gain deeper understanding of flooding and the impacts.
Students understand the concept of problem solving
Students participate with interactive technology and remain on task
Resources
IWB secure internet access. Pre loaded websites checked appropriate for
student use
http://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/
Flood Flume digital Photos see attached digital photographs
Google earth to virtually track where river begins

Explore the issue

As we are starting a new term, I thought we might take this time to

look at the interesting problem of flooding.

Tuning In

What do we know about flooding? Does it effect us? Does it effect

anything else? Where does flooding come from? Do we contribute
to flooding? Do we contribute to the detrimental effects of flooding?
What is the scope of flooding?
Brainstorm all students ideas and answers on the IWB.

Lesson
Body

Students on their laptops are to access their individual wiki blog

and title a new page FLOODING

Students then to record their thoughts, ideas, concerns, question.

Delivering
the
content
through
specific
strategies

LM access student Wiki list and selects students- displaying to the

class their blog entry and discussing with class, providing feedback
to student ie Student A raises a good point, Who agrees with
Student B?
LM highlights point of discussion on IWB to scaffold into a problem
based learning experience, drawing on effects.
LM revisits where the river ends up? Flood waters released into the
ocean and onto the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park. Ask students to
consider the effects of this, would they consider it a great impact or
a small impact?
Access NASA website and show the images of The Great Barrier
Reef Image of the day
http://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/Search/index.php?
q=great+barrier+reef
Discuss what students can see. Would they suggest this was taken
around the time of a flood why/why not?
Display digital photos of GBR with flood flume sourced from Weebly
http://elearningresourcespage.weebly.com
Explicitly explain a Flume is the word to describe the pollutant of
water. What would the effects be? What damage, if any do you
think it might cause? Why is the water brown?

Lesson
Conclusion

LM informs students that this problem is authentic and experienced

in real life with effects that are seen over generations.

Students are asked to refer to their first blog post on flooding and
contribute to the collaborative whiteboard an answer to one of the
following questions

Evaluation / Reflection

Was the lesson successfully with delivering content with pedagogical

design?
Were the components of ICT embedded in the lesson successfully?
Are students engaging in all aspects of the learning experience?
Are there aspects to be enhanced?
Are students gaining recognition that the impacts on flooding have a
detrimental effect on the Great Barrier Reef?
Are students showing aspects of critical thinking and developing ideas to
help fix the problem?
