Communication is by far the most significant ability that we hold as human beings.
Websters defines communication as, the act or process of using words, sounds, signs, or
behaviors to express or exchange information or to express your ideas, thoughts, feelings, etc., to
someone else. There is no doubt in anyones mind that knowledge is by far the greatest gift that
a human being can share. Although, that is the case communication cannot exist without
knowledge and knowledge cannot be shared or expressed without communication. Now a days,
it seems that the advancement of technology has changed communication. As an educator
communication is a vital part of ensuring success for the student, but the communication does
not stop at the student, the parents are as an intricate part to the communication process. Yet
technology has also made it possible to incorporate the global community as part of the
communication process in todays classrooms. Overall, technology has enhanced communication
with parents, students and the global community in the classroom.
It is absolutely important that parents are involved in the daily activities of their student
and that they are aware of any problems or concerns a teacher might have. Many parents deeply
feel that there is a necessity for them to be involved in their childs education for they are
invested in their future. Well, sometimes it is easier said than done, because in most cases
families have both parents working and this makes it difficult to attend parent, teacher
conferences which are mainly always held during the day on to about six oclock at night while
parents are still at work. Parent involvement might be what really sets the bar for student success,
that is why it essential that the communication between teacher and student is present. Using
technology as a means of communication is a way to allow parents to be involved although they
cannot be present for conferences and meetings. Olmstead (2013) mentioned that blogs, wikis,

and email provide parents with the two-way communication when they need to pull information
or respond when needed. Which is a big plus for the working parents who want to be involved in
their childs academic achievement. In addition, Olmstead (2013) adds that electronic means of
communication with parents can also include voice calling systems, websites, email and parent
portals.
Technology has become an everyday part of the lives of this younger generation, they are
practically born holding a smart phone or tablet. With that in mind, classrooms in schools may
look the same, but they have totally been revolutionized by technology in the last ten years.
Wynn (2013) says that if a student has a notebook it is not the one that you may find at a local
discount store, but an electronic version that connects the student to a environment of
applications, social media and Internet options. This is something that is not necessarily negative,
but if utilized in a smart way it can be an advantage to open up communication channels with
students in the classroom. The secret though lies in interacting with the students and in figuring
out what works with them and really sparks their interest and imagination. In concluding, the
demand to incorporate technology with the curriculum is ever more necessary. Wynn (2013)
assures that throughout academia, the key priority continues to be one of adapting the classroom
to effectively engage digital learners. What ever the case, technology seems to keep students
motivated to be engaged in the classroom curriculum which opens the lines of communications.
We live today in a world of ever-growing global interdependence, which means that
students need to be better prepared to compete in the global society. They require an increased
knowledge of geography and a deeper understanding of world cultures and politics to compete
successfully within the global community (Hoeflinger, 2012). Through technology teachers and
students together can visit other parts of the world through via satellite, Skype and other

technological capabilities that allows us to be in one place and interact with people from the
other side of the globe face to face. Hoeflinger (2012) adds that educators can provide
opportunities for students to meet peers from other countries and can add global studies to their
classroom curriculum.
In conclusion, it is amazing the pace technology has grown and how it is taking over
every aspect of personal, business, and educational life. The fact remains that communication is
essential in being successful and creating a positive and productive environment in the classroom
and technology can allow us to enhance the communication with parents, students and the global
community.
