English 11 Poetry Portfolio Project Guidelines


Formatting:
The Poetry Project is to be packaged and presented in an inviting and engaging and professional
format (everything typed other than analysis #1 and #2
The poetry Portfolio Project includes
o Table of contents
o Artists note (details on PPT)
o Poetry analysis x7
Copy of each poem (poems over forty lines may be abridged (shortened; condensed)
An analysis for each poem
o Personal response to the project (details on PPT)
o Works cited page (this will show me where you got your poems from)
Content: Analysing poems
You must analyze seven poems, where at least three (3) poems for analysis must come from Inside
Poetry or with permission from Ms. Bergman. Two (2) poems may come from your music library
and/or other sources. Two (2) poems must be your own poems with accompanying analysis that
shows your understanding of your own poetic writing.
Each analysis has three parts:
o The Poem (a printed copy in your project portfolio)
o The step by step analysis you performed (either TP-CASTT or the question by question
process)
o Paragraph of analysis
Analyses
Analysis #1: Poem in class (TPCASTT or Question by Question)
Analysis #2: Imagery analysis (Imagery sheet)
Analyses #3: Your choice from textbook (TPCASTT or Question by Question)
Analyses #4 & #5: Your choice from your own sources (TPCASTT or Question by Question)
Analyses #6 & #7: Your own poems
Paragraphs
Follow the PEET paragraph format, and use dress ups from the Stylistic Techniques handout,
where quality of the written analysis is inviting, informative, engaging, and thought-provoking.
The development of each written analysis is enhanced by appropriate details and information,
including:
o at least one (1) direct reference to the poem, which has been cited correctly using
quotation marks and identifying the line number of the poem and
o at least one (1) reference to a poetic device found within the poem
o a statement about the meaning/theme/purpose of the poem
Language & English Conventions: The Poetry Project has few surface feature errors, and they are
only noticeable if looking for them. Spelling, punctuation, and grammar are used with a high degree of
accuracy. The student demonstrates a strong command of sentence structure, word choice and syntax.
The student takes risk with his/her writing voice and style.
