BALDWIN STREET COMMUNITY WALK

PREPARATION- COMMUNITY WALK

Discuss the meaning of culture and all its aspects, including food, clothing ,
music, art, beliefs etc
Identify the different cultural groups of the students in the classroom.
Introduce the purpose of the field trip.
BRAINSTORM: Mount sticky notes on a Wonder Wall
o What do you expect to see there?
Divide students into groups of 4 and assign different cultures.
Discuss code of conduct expected for all students to follow.
Research and jot notes individually on how the culture assigned to them has
contributed to theCanadian community.
Instruct the students on how to document their observations on the trip.

DURING THE COMMUNITY WALK

IN CLASS prior to leaving:


o The teacher will handout a graphic organizer to each group of
students to fill out during the walk. The questions to be answered are
What do you see, what do you hear, what do you wonder?
o Assign roles: recorder, photographer, navigator, timekeeper.
o Review the code of conduct (Once more).
Decide a meeting point and time.
Dispatch the groups with a team leader.
Accommodation will be arranged for students who have mobility concerns.

POST-COMMUNITY WALK
IN CLASS:
The students will gather in their respective groups and summarize their
research and field observations.
A presenter, chosen by the group members, will present the information
about the culture they have collected.
After each presentation, students from the other groups are encouraged to
ask questions.
ASSESSMENT:
Students will be assessed on the basis of:

Their performance on the graphic organizer


The presentation content
On being able to communicate how different communities and cultures
contribute to the Canadian identity
