Abstract
The mineral requirement all over the world has seen a tremendous increase in the past few years.
Thus, the need of the hour is improvisation in the technique of comminution without
compromising with the energy costs. As a result, there is a dire need of developing improved
economical methodologies which can cater to the needs. For this the various particle breakage
mechanisms were studied. This enabled us to conclude several things. For example, stirred mills
are more energy efficient than tumbling mills. Further, we may add that type of grinding media
in the stirred mills that influences the subsequent flotation due to the change of particle breakage
mechanisms. As a result of this study we differentiated between different particle breakage
mechanisms and how they came into existence.

Key Words: Comminution, particle breakage mechanism, stirred mills, tumbling mills, media, flotation
