Step by Step instruction

Step 1: Get materials for shoe construction
1. Gather the materials for each part of the shoe.
2. Use leather or any sturdy material for the outer portion of the shoe
3. Obtain an insole.
a. This can be purchased pre-made. (Ex. Dr. Scholls Insoles)
4. Obtain cork to create the cushioning material that goes in between the
outsole and the insole
5. Purchase an outsole or use an existing one from an existing shoe.
6. Obtain a welt
a. A strip of leather or other sturdy material used to attach the upper
section of the shoe to the soles.
7. Obtain sturdy thread
a. Keep in mind that this thread will be visible at the end of
construction.
8. Obtain cutting tools
a. X-acto blade
b. Feather knife
c. Scissors
9. Utilize a sewing machine to aid with stitching and design
10. Obtain strong glue that is appropriate for use with leather.
a. Rubber cement

Step 2: Purchase a pattern

1. Obtain a shoe pattern
a. Preferably in the desired choice of material for the shoe.
2. Use shoe patterns to form the upper, the heel, the sides, and the sole of the
shoe.

Step 3: Cut and assemble the pattern

1. Use the X-acto blade to cut out the pieces from the pattern onto the proper
material.
a. Cut the pieces on a wood cutting board to withstand the blade cuts.
b. When cutting, leave at least an inch of extra material along the
bottom of the shoe and at least a centimeter where the pieces of the
upper will join together, which creates a seam allowance.
2. Once the pieces are cut out, make sure that the pattern pieces align
correctly.
3. Use the feather knife to clean up the edges of the pattern pieces that join to
make the seam allowance.
a. The smoother the edges, the thinner the material. This helps the
material overlap without creating bumps.
b. This step is difficult and takes practice, so practice on scrap pieces
first.

Step 4: Stitch and glue the pieces together

1. Obtain a last (shoemaking form)
2. Assemble the pieces together first by gluing them with rubber cement.
3. Once assembled, tape the main piece to the last and then glue the
remaining pieces of the upper together
a. Using a 3D shape helps with visualizing the design of the shoe
4. Stitch together the pieces of the upper. Lining can be added if you prefer.
5. Use the sewing awl and sturdy thread to stitch the upper together.
6. Stitch the welt to the upper.
a. Stitch the welt with its facing side against the facing side of the
upper, along the seam line of your pattern.
7. Join together the outsole and the cushioning materials by gluing them
together.
8. Sew the welt to the outsole and the cushioning materials.
a. Then, using the sew awl, stitch the welt to the sole with the nonfacing side of the welt against the top of the sole and cushion.
9. Trim the excess material and add any finishing touches to your shoe such
as laces, color, polish, etc.
a. Once complete, you have now created your first pair of shoes.
