4.)Studenthelperswhocanplaytrumpet,saxophone,bass,andsing.
Procedure
1.) Havetheclasssitdownandmakeacircle,introduceyourselfandasktheclass
howtheirdaysare.(1min)
2.) Asktheclassiftheyhaveafavoritesongtheywouldliketosing.After
singingitonetimethrough,trysingingitsoftly,andthenloudly.Askthe
studentstotakeinadeepbreathandusegoodposturewhilesinging.Make
suretomodelwellforthestudents.(2min)
3.) Tellthestudentsyouaregoingtoplayanexercise.Havethemstandupand
spreadoutintotwoverticallines.Tellthestudentsthattheyaregoingtoplay
agamesimilartoSimonSays.Sayta,ta,ta,taandhavethestudentsrepeat.
Afterthis,placeaccentsonthefirstandthirdta,andafterthis,accentson
thesecondandfourthta.Then,sayone,two,three,four.Oncethisis
down,starttomarchinplaceandmakesurethestudentsmarchwhilesaying
1,2,3,4.Afterthis,playWhentheSaintsGoMarchingIn,andhavethe
studentsmarchwiththemusic.(3min)
4.) Tellthestudentstositinacircleandhandouteggshakerstotheclass.Tell
thestudentstoplacetheeggshakersinfrontofthemandtonottouchthem

untilwestartplaying.First,havetheclasssaycount1,2,3,4andthenhave
themusetheireggshakerstoshakeonbeats1and3.Afterthis,havethe
studentsonlyshaketheireggson2and4.Usingthelaptop,playTwinkle
LittleStar,andhavethestudentsshaketheireggsonbeats1and3.Explain
thisishowwelistentoourtraditionalmusic.Tellthemthatthe1and3are
knownasstrongbeats.Then,tellthestudentsthatthereisatypeofmusicthat
thestrongbeatsareon2and4.PlayItDontMeanaThingonthelaptop
andhavethestudentsshaketheireggsontwoandfour..(5min)
5.) Tellthestudentsthatthepieceofmusicthatwasplayingisadifferentstyleof
musicandwearegoingtolearnaboutit.Thisstyleofmusiciscalledjazz.

6.) Askthestudentsiftheylikethesongthatwasplayed.UsingthePowerPoint
presentation,giveaquickhistoryonwhatJazzmusicis,andwhereitbegan.
Saythatinjazzmusic,therearedifferenttypesofinstrumentsthatareplayed.
WiththePowerPoint,gothrougheachinstrument(piano,saxophone,drums,
trumpet,andbass),showingwhattheylooklike.Havethestudenthelpers
playontheirinstrumentssothatthestudentshavecanaliveexperience
listeningtotheseinstruments.(5min)
7.) Giveaquizonwhateachoftheinstrumentsare.UsingthePowerPoint
Presentation,askthestudentstoraisetheirhandsandpickononetoanswer
whatinstrumentisbeingshown(3min)

8.) Telltheclassthattheywillbehearinglivemusicandthatyouwantthemto
dancewithit.Togetherwiththestudenthelpers,playAutumnLeaves.(3min)
9.) SingagoodbyesongusingthethemefromAutumnLeaves.
