Section 1: The Plan

See the CEP 452 Lesson Plan Guidelines for detailed information.
LESSON OVERVIEW
Title: Area and Perimeter of Irregular Shapes
Author: Nicole Kleinschmidt
Subject: Math
Grade Level: 3rd
Duration: 2, 45-minute sessions
Unit Description: Part of a unit on area and perimeter of all shapes
Lesson Goals:
Students will be to able to calculate the area of irregular figures
Students will be to able to calculate the perimeter of irregular figures
Common Core Standards
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.3.MD.D.8
Solve real world and mathematical problems involving perimeters of polygons, including
finding the perimeter given the side lengths, finding an unknown side length, and
exhibiting rectangles with the same perimeter and different areas or with the same area
and different perimeters.
Big Ideas: Area and Perimeter, working with Irregular shapes
Barriers: lack of background knowledge about the materials, cant handle group work,
cant read the directions, overwhelmed by all the numbers
METHOD
Anticipatory Set:
Students will watch the beginning of a video to refresh their memory about what
irregular shapes are, and what the formulas to find perimeter and area are.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZASBmoylCPc
After they watch the video they will fill out a study guide that goes over the formulas
again
They can choose if they would rather fill in the guide by hand or fill it in on the
computer.
Introduce and Model New Knowledge/Guided Practice
The students will have options on what to do next to prepare for independent work
Option 1: Mini Lesson with the teacher on area and perimeter of irregular and
composite shapes followed by practice problems and examples.
Adapted from CAST: UDL Lesson Plan Builder: http://lessonbuilder.cast.org/

Option 2: Review study guide and complete at least 5 problems on

http://www.shodor.org/interactivate/activities/ShapeBuilder/
Option 3: Review their study guide and complete Worksheet 10-8 (see below)
While students have the option to pick where they want to do, I have the ability to
move them if I feel like they cant handle one of the groups.

Provide Independent Practice

Students will work to complete activities with different numeric values attached to
them. They need to complete enough activities to total 10 points
2 Points
o Complete the 2 page Counting Squares Worksheet (Paper or Interactive
Online Edition) (see below)
Play Perimeter and Area Game Level 2 or 3 at:
http://www.bgfl.org/bgfl/custom/resources_ftp/client_ftp/ks2/maths/peri
meter_and_area/index.html
Complete the Calculating Area & Perimeter Worksheet (Paper or Interactive
Online Edition) (see below)
5 Points
Work with a partner: Each person should create 5 irregular shapes on grid
paper or using pattern blocks. Then switch and have your partner calculate the
perimeter and area of the 5 shapes.

Watch the video then fill out the Math Live worksheet (Paper or Interactive
Online Edition) (see below)
http://www.learnalberta.ca/content/me5l/html/math5.html?goLesson=13

8 Points (Individual or Group)

Create a skit, video, power point, poster, or song that explains how to find the
area and perimeter of irregular shapes, must include at least one example
problem.

Create a blue print of your dream house using grid paper or using
smallblueprinter found at: http://www.smallblueprinter.com/sbp.html
o Make sure to label the area and perimeter of each room, along with the area
of the entire house.

WRAP UP
When the students have completed their 10 points have the students check off with
me so I know theyre done
As a whole class go through an example of each of the options so students can check
their own work
Allow students to share out their work
ASSESSMENT

Formative, Ongoing Assessment

As the students are doing their point collecting activities stop and ask them to
explain what theyre working on, correct any misconceptions
Summative Assessment
The quality of work from their point collecting activities
o Did they complete it?
o Was it completed correctly?
o Was it their own work?
