CEP 452: Lesson Plan

Section 1: The Plan

LESSON OVERVIEW
Title: Measure the Treasures of Your Room!
Author: Madeline Wahl
Subject: Math
Grade Level: 2nd grade
Duration: 35 minutes
Unit Description:
This unit introduces measurement, using a ruler to figure out the length of a variety
of objects in both inches and centimeters.
Lesson Goals:
Students will be able to measure a number of objects using a ruler.
Students will be able to use both inches and centimeters when measuring the
different lengths of objects.
Common Core Standards
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.2.MD.A.2: Measure the length of an object twice, using
length units of different lengths for the two measurements; describe how the two
measurements relate to the size of the unit chosen.
Big Ideas:
Students will be able to independently measure an object in both inches and
centimeters using a ruler.
Students will be able to distinguish a longer object from a shorter object, with proof
through measuring in both inches and centimeters.
Barriers:
For those with hearing impairments, they may need a set of headphones in order to
hear the directions and instructions on how to use a ruler, and the different units.
For those with visual impairments, it is important that they will be able to see a
demonstration on how to measure an object. Providing an example using the ELMO
overhead projector will make it easier for these students to see how to use the ruler
and the featured units.
Another accommodation that can be made for those with visual impairments is by
providing a ruler that has large numbers on it. The small numbers on a generic ruler
are difficult to see and count. Providing a ruler with large numbers on it will make
measuring easier for the student to do.

Anticipatory Set
Provide each student with a list of items that they will need to measure.
Ask students to predict and record how long they think each item on the list is.
Provide students with a ruler, and have them explore it and its amenities,
specifically the different units: inches and centimeters.
Introduce and Model New Knowledge
After students have made predictions about the items on the list, have them share
their findings with the people at their table.
Teach students how to measure the length of an object using a ruler. Show this
demonstration on the ELMO.
Teach students the difference between inches and centimeters, and how regardless
if an object has a higher number when measured in centimeters (in comparison to
inches), it is still the same length.
Provide Guided Practice
Students will work with their table members to measure the first item on their list.
Students will measure in both inches, and in centimeters.
Have students collaborate their ideas of how to measure by double-checking their
measurements in both units.
Once students have measured the first item in both units, have each table group
read their measurements out loud so that the other groups can compare and
contrast their measurements. At this time, the teacher will address any areas of
misconception before continuing the lesson.
Provide Independent Practice
Students will work independently and measure each item on the list.
Each item is to be measured in both inches and centimeters.
Once each item on the list has been measured, students are open to measure any
two additional items of their choice.
The teacher will informally assess students during this time by walking around to
check for comprehension. The teacher will look to see that the proper units are
being used, and the measurements are relatively accurate.
WRAP UP
Debriefing:
Students will share and compare their answers out loud with the class.
If necessary, the teacher will correct any errors and address any last misconceptions
that students may have.
ASSESSMENT
Informal, Formative, Ongoing Assessment:

Adapted from CAST: UDL Lesson Plan Builder: http://lessonbuilder.cast.org/

Throughout the lesson, the teacher will check for students comprehension by
walking around the room to see if each student is accurately measuring each item on
the list, using the proper unit.

Summative Assessment:
Students will take a formal assessment at the end of the year that will cover a
number of topics, including measuring the length of something in both inches and
centimeters.
