The Beginning

I.

Objectives:
At the end of the session, the students should be able to:
A. discriminate between positive and negative values
B. note significant details
C. respond to questions raised in different situations; and
D. evaluate oneself and others through literary values learned.

A. Topic: Introduction to Greek Literature
B. Reference: McDougal Litell, Green level, pp. 1-21
English Communication Arts and Skills IV, by Josephine B. Serrano
C. Material: Hand-outs, power point (slides), LCD Laptop

III.

Procedure
A. Pre-reading:
1. Motivation
Task: The two sides of the Coin
Instructions: Random pictures will be flashed into the screen. The students must be
able to associate these with two opposing ideas from the pictures flashed. The
teacher will give an example through the first picture.

Give a brief example a view on good and evil.


Then give a short introduction about Greek myth.
B. Reading
While reading, the students are asked to follow through the given questions/pointers.
1. Who is Uranus?
2. Where did the story occur?
3. Why do you believe that the storys title is The Beginning?

4. What kept the story going?


5. If you were given the chance to change a scene or a part of the story, which would it
be and why?

Read silently (The summary of The Beginning will be provided)

C. Post Reading:
Task: Im him/her
Instruction: Choose a character from any of the stories and write at least 5
characteristics your chosen character has which you believe you posses.
Justify each characteristic by giving examples.
IV.

Evaluation:
Instructions:
1. The class will be divided into three groups.
2. Each of the first 2 groups will be given a specific story to work on (Gaea and Uranus,
The war with the titans,).
3. They must be able to recreate the scenario in the story in any possible manner they
could (singing, dancing, skit etc).
4. The third group would be tasked to critique the performance of each group by
documenting the before; during; and after of the performances.
5. Their comments will also be heard after the performance of the first two groups.
6. They will be given 15 minutes to prepare and 5 minutes for each group to present.
Guide Questions:
1. Who are the characters in your story?
2. What kind of personality do the characters in your story have?
3. Where did the story happen?
4. What kind of connection can you see with the scenes and the plot in your story?
5. What can you say about the story?
