OUTCOMES FROM ALBERTA PROGRAM OF STUDIES

General
Learning
Outcomes:
Specific
Learning
Outcomes:

Use patterns to describe the world and to solve problems

1. Demonstrate an understanding of increasing patterns by:
Describing, reproducing, extending, creating
Numerical (numbers to 100) and non-numerical patterns using manipulatives,
diagrams, sounds and actions [C, CN, PS, R, V]

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Students will:
1. Review writing a descriptive sentence and strategies
2. Make their own increasing patterns and write a descriptive sentence

ASSESSMENTS

Key Questions:
Products/Performance
s:

Do the students have a better understanding after reviewing strategies?

Can the students make their own increasing pattern and fill in their pattern
rule?
What is an example of a pattern rule?
What are some strategies that you could use to make an increasing pattern?

Introduction
Looking at real life increasing patterns and then review strategies that
students could use to make their increasing pattern. (ie. using different
colors for each new shape added or go along and draw the shape that
stays in the same spot the whole time. Or counting) Leave the strategies
up on the board. On the same board as the agenda, write up the
sentence My pattern starts at _ and increases by _. Go over one
example.
After looking over real life increasing patterns, ask students if they know
what the pattern rule is.
Students will pay attention at the carpet area and will not distract their
neighbors. Prior to lesson, tell students that you do not want to see
anyone wiggling around or distracting their neighbors, and if they are,
they can come sit at the front beside the teacher.
Write the to do list for activity on the board with example attached
(each step in a different color): 1. Name 2. Pattern Rule 3. Draw

Activity/Activities

Body
Students will write their name at the top of their blank piece of paper.
The will then write their pattern rule at the bottom of the first section.
They will draw lines to split the page into four sections to draw their
increasing pattern. Students will then draw their increasing pattern.
If they use a strategy that requires colors the students can use pencil
crayons.
Ask students to give a thumb up if they understand the task, a side ways
thumb if they are unsure and a down wards thumb if they do not know.
The students who are unsure can stay behind at the carpet for further
instructions, while the rest of the students are dismissed to go work
based off of their table groups.
Expectations for Behaviour:
Ask the students to quietly tell the person next to them their favorite
color. That is how quiet they should be talking to their neighbors while
they work. No one should be getting out of their desks and they are only
using pattern blocks to make increasing patterns.
Assessment:
Are students able to make an increasing pattern?
Are students able to make a sentence that states what their pattern rule
is?
Differentiation:
Students can use pattern blocks (manipulatives) to assist their learning
The teacher will also be walking around during the activity to provide
additional help
Closure
Ask the students did anyone make an increasing pattern on the back of
their paper? What was the biggest increasing pattern?
On the back of the paper, have students draw a smiley face if they
understand, unsure face or a sad face if they do not understand
Verbal praise and help while the students work. Written feedback on
their activity sheets.
The students will use chart paper to make increasing patterns using
different strategies

Reflections from the lesson

It helped students to see number of different strategies they could use,

as well as having a starter sentence.
Students were also very interested to see the real life example of an
increasing pattern.
