What is a Directive?
• A directive type of legislation made public
by the European Parliament and the
Council of the European Union that binds
member countries to achieve stated
objectives within a certain time limit, but
allows the national authorities in each
country to choose the choice of form and
means to be used to meet . -

Battery Directive
Why this directive was set up
• This directive was set up because batteries can
contain toxic metals, and when they are thrown
away they are consider to harmful to the
environment.
• It gives member states up to the 26th September
2008 to implement its national laws and rules on
batteries.
• However some of the states have already
started this process and introduced laws
regarding batteries.
Objectives of Battery Directive
• To produce batteries with less hazardous
substances:
• E.g -
– Lead
– Lead-Acid
– Mercury
– Cadmium

• To ensure better battery waste


management
Recycling batteries and
Prohibitions
• It must be easy for consumers to remove
and insert batteries to electronic items
• The member states shall provide
collection sites that are accessible and
free of charge to the public. Battery
distributors may be required to provide this
aswell.
• Collection Rate targets –
» 25% 4 years after law is passed
» 45% 8 years after law is passed
