New guidelines for writing a 300-word essay

a) Use the official school heading.


b) Indicate the number of words on the line below the date.

c) Double-space your text ; if you do not, you will have to write it again.
d) Use a pen; absolutely no pencils. If you use a pencil you will have to write it again.
(If possible, write your essay on a computer.)

e) Do NOT begin a paragraph with the words first, firstly, second, secondly, third, thirdly, and
so on.
f)

Write a title for your essay, but not something like English, Essay, or Composition.

g) Indent all paragraphs.


Paragraph 1

1. Write a general statement to introduce the topic. (One or two sentences.)


2. Write a question to present the problem that you are going to
discuss. (One sentence.)

3. Give your answer to the question, but DO NOT ANNOUNCE YOUR ARGUMENTS.
(One sentence.)
Paragraph 2

1. Give an argument to support your opinion.


Do NOT give more than one argument in the same paragraph.
(One sentence, at the beginning of the paragraph.)

2. Explain your argument. Give facts and/or examples.


(As many sentences as necessary.)

1. Give another argument to support your opinion.


Do NOT give more than one argument in the same paragraph.
(One sentence, at the beginning of the paragraph.)

1. Summarize your opinion. Begin with the words In conclusion or


To conclude. Do NOT begin with the word Finally. (One sentence.)

2. Summarize your arguments, but dont explain them. (One or two sentences.)

If you have difficulty writing 300 words


with two arguments, add a third argument.
