Students will be able to explain the beginnings of the civil rights movement.
Students will learn the major court decisions that propelled civil rights backward and forward.
Students will be able to explain the civil rights legislations that passed during the 1960s.
Students will be able to reflect on events that occurred in the 1960s and tie it in to todays society.
Unit Summary:
Students will learn the origins of the civil rights movement, from the reconstruction era to the 1960s. They also be able to make
connections between events that occurred in the past and tie it in to todays society.
Assessment Plan:
Entry-Level:
Students will Complete a quiz
provided on the unit web page to gage
how much students know before the
unit.
Formative:
Students will complete a quiz after
each lesson. They will also have
assignments that will directly tie in
with the lessons.

Students will write research paper
about a key aspect about the unit they
found the most interesting or
important. This research paper will
encompass the whole unit and will
require students to gather all the
knowledge they have gained.
Lesson Activities:
They will have to complete a timeline on the origins
of the civil rights. The timeline must be done in
groups and must address the specific period
presented. They will also have to take a quiz
concerning the lesson once it is complete.

Students will have to complete a group newsletter
regarding one of the key court cases. They will have
to show understanding of the topic on hand. They will
have to work in groups and will turn in the timeline at
the end of the lesson. They will also have to complete
a web-based activity on key court cases that will be
turned in for a grade.

Lesson Activities:
For this lesson students will have to complete a
graphic organizer on important legislation. They will
also have to have to complete a reflection based on
what they have learned that will count for a large part
of their grade.

which makes it very easy for students to use. It also provides video that further reinforces the information it presents.

This website is incredibly useful when looking up court cases. I felt it was the best in providing the background of the
court case and the effect it had on society. It is well organized and easy to use.
