‘Types of ac induction motor rotors.
“There are two types of rotors used in Induction motors. Most use the cage or ‘squrre cage’ rotor
‘Single cage or double cage Known as Squirrel cage rotors,
“The induction rotor is made ofa laminated cylinder with slots in its surface, The windings in these
‘slots are one of two types. The most commen isthe squire-cage winding. This entire winding is
made up of heavy copper bare connected together at each end by a metal ring made of copper or
brass. No insulation is required between the core and the bas. This is because cf the very low
voltages generated inthe rotor bars.
Inthe cage rotor, the numberof bars is usually a prime number, such as 47.

Wound rotor
[An altemate design, called the wound rote, i used when variable speed is required. In this case,
the rotor has the same qumter of poles as the stator and the windings are made of wire,
connected o slp rings onthe shaft. Carbon brushes connect the slip rings to an external controler
Such as a variable resistor tat allows changing the motors sip rate. In certain high-power vari
speed wound-rotorcrives, the sip-‘requency energy is captured, rectified and returned tothe
power supply through an inverter.
‘Compared to squire cage rotors, wound rotor motors are expensive anc require maintenance of
the slp rings and brushes, but they were the standard form for variable speed contol betore the
advent of compact power electronic devices,Osean tapes ntte trot

Types: single cage, double cage, wound rotor
Introduction - Induction Motors
‘The induction motor isthe most commonly used type of ac motor. ts simple,
rugged construction costs relatively litle to manufacture, The induction mator
has @ rotor that isnot connected to an extemal source of voltage.
“The induction motor derves its name from the fact that ac voltages are
Induced inthe rotor cicut by the rotating magnetic fed ofthe stator. In many ways, Induction in
this motor is similar to the induction between the primary and secondary windings ofa transformer.
Large motors and permanently mounted motors that drive loads at fay constant speed are often
Induction motors,
Examples are found in washing machines, refrigerator compressors, bench grinders, and table
‘saws. The stalor constuction of the three-phase induction motor andthe thres-phase synchronous
‘motor ae almost identical. However, their rotors are completely diferent

For higher-power applications where a polyphase electrical supply is avaiable, the three phase (or
polyphase) AC induction motors used, The phase diferences between the tee phases ofthe
polyphase electrical supply create a rotating electromagnetic fla inthe motor
“Through electromagnetic induction, the rotating magnetic field induces a current in the conductors
Inthe rotor, which in tum sets up a counterbalancing magnetic field that causes the rtor to turnin
te direction the field is rotating, The rotor must always rotate slower than the rtating magnetic
field produced by the polyphase electrical supply otherwse, no counterbalancing field wl be
produced inthe rotor.
Induction motors are the workhorses of industry and metors upto about 500 kV in output are
produced in highly standarcized frame sizes, making them nearly completely herchangeable
