Liberal A liberal is those who want some change but want it legally.


Radical A radical is those who want great change and may suggest less than legal
means to get it.


Conservative- A conservative is those in power and want to keep the power

Domestic vs. Foreign matters Domestic is in your country problems and foreign would be
outside your country.


Autocratic An autocratic is one who holds all the power.

Divine Right theory The divine right theory is the right to rule derived from god, not
from the consent of people.


Russification This forced people not from Russia to use the Russian language.



Pan-Slavism The union of all Slavic people under Russian leadership.



Emancipation Edict- This freed all the serfs.


Peoples Will That Russian radicals turned to violent actions


Pogroms It was big riots with a lot of massacres of Jews.


Nihilists It was a Russian movement that rejected all authority.


Social Democratic Labor Party It was an imitation of the German Social Democratic
Party.

1. Summarize Ideas:
a. Explain how liberalism affected Russias domestic policy.
Because there where many different ethnic groups and they were getting a lot of
influence from the west. Also a lot of people wanted the change because they didnt agree
with the way that the czar ruled.





b. Describe two features of Russias foreign policy.
1) In the Balkans, Russia promoted Pan-Slavism the union of all Slavic peoples under
Russian Leadership
2) Elsewhere, Russia sought to continue expansion.






2. Organizing Ideas:
a. List the liberal reforms that Alexander II accomplished in Russia.
He gave freedom to all the serfs. Factory owners would benefit if the serfs where
free.




b. What did he do with regard to the serfs?
He gave all of the serfs freedom





3. Analyzing Ideas:
a. Why did the Revolution of 1905 fail to overthrow the monarchy?
First the army remained loyal and thus would not end the czar regime. The French,
bound to Russia by Military alliance and lent money to the government. Last The many
revolutionary groups where divided.




b. How did Nicholas II respond to the Revolution of 1905? He issued a yield called
the October Manifesto which promised individual liberties and provided for the election of
a parliament.
