1.Getcrystalclearaboutyourgoals.
What do you want your students to learn? What do you want them to be able to do? Try not to think of the
tasks you want them to do; focus on the end goal.
Trent Ashcraft I want students to understand the role of interest groups in American democracy.
Brian Lindsey I want my students to be able to solve conflicts on their own.
Todd Alexander I want my students to apply inductive and deductive reasoning concepts in formulating
geometric proofs.
Julie Bowman I want my students to be able to present about something they learned in Social
Studies. I want them to be able to do it with a group and present it to the class.
Anna-Marie Carr I want my students to know the difference between compromise and cooperation.
Ben Cottrell I want my students to be able to construct parallel and perpendicular lines with only a
compass and a straight edge.
Jeffrey Dalrymple
Elizabeth Galle I want my students to recognize the difference between living and non-living.
Jena Hudson I want my students to visually identify a steady beat around our school.
Bobbi Keinsley I want my students to construct arguments, share their opinions and reflect on their
writing.
Latoya Malone I want my students to giive an informative presentation.
Monique Porter I want my students to be able to put together an informational oral and visual
presentation on a nonfiction text. I want the to learn how writes make informational text
interesting and exciting.
Scott Rolfs I want my students to create timelines of events in history, outlining the main points
along a continuum, and pulling from several sources to add pictures, text, and video to
accent their work.
Andrea Ruley I want my students to learn how to create a product from start to finish using technology
that they can share with the class. I want them to be proud of their work. I want them to
create a Utopia and advertise it to encourage others to join.
Emilee Stumler I want my students to be able to create a scientific diagram using a real life photograph.
George Taylor I want my students to learn about basic nutrition.
Alan Wilson I want my students to communicate about their families and friends.
2.Reviewyourpreviousactivitiesandidentifywhatyoulikedabout
them.
What made the most difference for students? What really got them thinking? Again, try not to think about
this worksheet was good or this chapter covered it well focus on the experiences of the students
and the gains they got from them.
Trent Ashcraft When my students are able to think for themselves, express their opinions, and create.
Brian Lindsey When the students were given role-play situations. I agree. They like those and
remember them. - Bratcher
Todd Alexander When my lessons are interactive and engaging for all students, through videos,
interactive questioning, games, and rewards for participation, my students will tend to
remember the material most.
Julie Bowman My students like when they have choices and when technology or hands on learning is
involved.
Anna-Marie Carr My students like when I add images to vocabulary. I think it scaffolds theirl learning.
Ben Cottrell Watching me perform the constructions on my computer and writing down each
individual step seemed to be helpful in the past. I also made a video of me doing the
constructions on Smartboard and posted it on the class Edline page.
Jeffrey Dalrymple
Elizabeth Galle My students enjoy using the smartboard so it is an added bonus to them.
Jena Hudson When my students are allowed to create their own projects through iPad apps.
Bobbi Keinsley When my students are allowed to choose their own topics to write about I always think
they produce better pieces. I havent taught first grade before so I am not sure how I will
address

it but in second I gave my students really clear examples of persuasives and we
analyzed them for their effectiveness.
Latoya Malone Many factors led to great success: in-class time as well as out of class time to work on a
project, developing a rubric for them to use as a guide from start to finish, being able to
collaborate with peers, and affording them the option of how they want to meet the
standard.
Monique Porter My students dont get a lot of exposure to working on the computers at school. Being
able to have them research their own nonfiction topic on the web that connected to their
physical text about their topic was great to see they really get into it. They also had to
find images to describe their topic and paste it to a word document. This was additional
lesson to teach and it was time consuming but the students really enjoyed it. The
biggest difference for them was being able to research on her own or with a partner; it
was great for them. It seemed like they were building collaborating skills and becoming
serious researchers.
Scott Rolfs Most experiences the students have had, that had an impact ,were those that included a
hands-on project where they created something, were able to have flexibility in the
design, and could choose a focus for the project that fit their interests.
Andrea Ruley My students are really into working with our new ipad cart. They all have google
accounts and are learning how to use those as well. The students liked the freedom to
go and create something with minimal instruction and a rubric to guide them.
Emilee Stumler When I modeled the lesson I was able to give a clear model of what their final piece
should resemble. The students enjoyed using the digital cameras and ipads to take
photos of their anoles. I feel like this allowed for them to truly own their learning.
George Taylor My students enjoy when I bring laptops into the gym to incorporate technology into
Physical Education.

Alan Wilson This used to be on poster board with cut out photocopied pictures. My students liked
seeing pictures. laughing, and finding out something about another students family.
Some knew the other family members and could agree or disagree with what was said.

Internet searches will uncover several!) Which one (or ones) can combine your essentials even if you
dont yet know how youre going to use it? (Click for ideas, more ideas)
Trent Ashcraft Notability, Narrable, Screencast, Prezi, Powtoons
Brian Lindsey Powtoon, Popplet, Tackk, Plicker, Popcorn maker (They could role-play with PowToon, I
agree. Even sketch out a role play and record with their phones if you are short on time) -
Bratcher
Todd Alexander PowerPoint, Prezi, Tackk, Youtube, Screencast, Educreations, Geogebra (free version
similar to Geometers sketchpad), Thinglink, Capzle, Padlet, Zaption
Julie Bowman I filled this part out last time. I am not sure why it didnt save. Prezi, Powtoon, tackk,
Haiku desk, slidebean.
Anna-Marie Carr Powerpoint, Youtube, Screencast, Google images, Smartboard matching and hangman
style games.
Ben Cottrell Smartboard app, Geometry Sketchpad app, Ruler and Compass Geometry app,

Alan Wilson Screencast, Flipsnack, Slidebean, Haiku Deck, Tackk, Powtoon

4.Keepanopenmind.
They say that there are no bad questions during brainstorming. There are no bad ideas or bad digital tools
at this point as long as they have the potential to help your students reach their goals. You dont
immediately have to have the right answers. Embrace the process even if theres some uncertainty in it.
(Thats part of the adventure.)
5.Generateseveralideasforpotentialactivities.
Make a list of things your students could do with the technology that would reach their goals. Identify what
you like and what you dont and then do some tweaking to get it right. Eventually, some of those ideas will
fall to the back of the pack and youll have some favorites.
Trent Ashcraft Create an outline of interest groups using Notability. Create an interactive video
presentation using Powerpoint and Youtube. Form their own interest group and create a
commercial advertising themselves using iMovie.
Brian Lindsey Make an instructional video of how to solve conflict in different areas of the school
building, then post them onto the schools wikipages for all to see with a blog for
feedback for other solutions to solving the problem.
Todd Alexander Research the history of Geometry through examining Euclids Elements and other works
by other geometers. Following a rubric, create a Tackk webpage which organizes
information gained from the research as well as imagery of Euclids work as well as video
explanations.
Julie Bowman work in a group to create a powerpoint with pictures, text, and maybe videos. Not sure if
school allows the students to search youtube for videos while on the wifi.
Anna-Marie Carr Work in small groups to create short skits of examples of cooperation and compromise.
Maybe record short youtube video or other audio examples.
Ben Cottrell make an instructional video, create an instructional power point
Jeffrey Dalrymple
Elizabeth Galle Students could take turns with the ipads and take a nature walk and take pics of
different objects and explain if they are lviing or non-living and how they know
Jena Hudson Travel around school to find evenly spaced objects (ex. monkey bars, bricks, etc.) that
visually represent a steady beat. Students will take images on their iPads. They will then
work in groups to create a Shadow Puppet story. They will record their voices over top of
the pictures to explain how the picture represents a steady beat. Then create a QR code
and display on bulletin in hallway.
Bobbi Keinsley work in a small group to create a persuasive video using puppet pal, students work
individually to write a persuasive book using book creator
Latoya Malone Students can create an interactive video presenting their topic. Students can record
themselves presenting their topic. The topics to choose from are any that we have
covered in class as long as it adheres to the rubric and is informative.
Monique Porter Nonfiction topic writing piece: Create a movie trailer, make a story book, design a digital
model of an environment or drawing of the object, animal or person, create a comic
book, and create a quiz to go with their project
Scott Rolfs With a group, create a storyboard for an event or period of time in history. Collaborate
with group members to bring in resources to the story from internet sources, personal
interviews, or pictures and video. Use the tech tools to culminate and present the
activity
Andrea Ruley create a commercial, design a brochure/ map
Emilee Stumler create an interactive nonfiction book covering the animals/critters/insects that the
students interact with throughout the JCPS science curriculum or science kits. students
will take digital photos and create interactive diagrams and incorporate fun facts into
their digital book
George Taylor They could create a powtoon lesson about nutrition. They could make a digital flipbook
about nutrition. They could make a Tackk presentation about nutrition. They could use
Prezi to do a presentation about nutrition.
Alan Wilson Make a video or slideshow with audio about their family, then post it on the internet as a
class. May be some privacy issues here.

6.Gatheropinions.
Provide your students the goals and some ideas for activities and tools to reach them. Then see what they
think if they have any new ideas, different ways to follow through on your previous ideas, new tools to
suggest. Ask some colleagues or post your thoughts on social media to gather feedback. We dont have to
be lone wolves theres a big pack of people to help us out!
Offer your opinion on at least one other classmates post. Be sure to sign off with your name so I know you
commented. Put your response next to their name so they can easily find it.
Trent Ashcraft
Brian Lindsey I really like your idea of posting to a wikispace for all of the school to see how to solve
conflict in areas of the school. Conflict areas could be playground, hallways, restrooms,
lunch room, classroom, and bus. I also like the feedback idea This could be good for
younger students to see as well instead of the teacher just explaining what to do. - Julie
Bowman

Brian, I like your idea of creating instructional videos on how to solve conflict issues. This
gives the students ownership of their actions. If the students demonstrate the issues
and create their own resolutions, they are more likely to solve their own problems without
teachers running interferance. Are this going to be avaliable school wide? Can teachers
use these to refer to when students are having problem in a specific area of the school?
This is creative, I might borrow it for some conflict resolution at my school!!- Who wrote
this?
Todd Alexander
Julie Bowman Hey Julie, I noticed you did not list any tech tools you may use for your social studies
presentation project, but I think a few good ones that students will enjoy are: animoto,
voicethread, comiclife, and prezi. I like animoto the best because students only have so
many characters they can use. This forces them to be direct and choose their words
wisely. It can be an intergrative assignment with writing as well. Be sure to provide a
rubric to help guide them as they put it together and look forward to the final products. If
it is a social studies lesson, are you going to share this with other classes? I wonder if
you could use it as an assessment of student learning and they research what they are
putting in the presentation along with having to share it. -Latoya Malone
Anna-Marie Carr I love your idea of making a short skit and videotaping for you tube! The kids would love
that and to seee it on a published site would make it even better! Elizabeth Galle
Ben Cottrell I like the instructional video idea or even a screencast of their powerpoint in case they do
not want to be video-recorded. The ability to truly teach something is supposed to be
one of the highest forms of learning. They could post it on Youtube as a tutorial for others
in class. They could also give and get feedback as to what they liked about the tutorial.
- Alan Wilson
Jeffrey Dalrymple
Elizabeth Galle I like the idea of taking a nature walk and using Ipads to take pictures on living and
non-living things. I think this would be fun for students because they would get to go
outside to learn. They would be using Ipads which are fun to use and they would be
taking many different pictures which would enhance their understanding and learning. -
George Taylor

Jena Hudson I really like your idea about having students use the ipads to take images and then add
audio. That seems really managable and meaningful. Creating the QR code to share
on your hallwaybulletin board makes it accessible to students, parents, and anyone
visiting your school. - Anna-Marie Carr
Bobbi Keinsley I like your idea about persuasive speech. Students do this all the time in everyday life. If
we can relate everyday examples of how they already do it, then its much easier for
them to be persuasive for the assignment. It also helps if they are passionate about the
topic, so I usually give them some latitude on that. The video idea is great, and Id like to
try it out sometime. A picture (video) is worth a thousand words !! - Scott Rolfs
I agree with you about allow your students to have a choice in picking their own topic
within the concept. The y take ownership of their work and really produce some
awesome pieces. I love the story book idea. My second grades are fascinated with
comic novels, so I think for this next 9 weeks writing project I hope to try to get them to
produce some comics books using Comic Creator or ComicLife.--Monique Porter
Latoya Malone I like incorporating video projects in my curriculum at the high school level. I can
imagine how much more engaging it would be at the elementary or middle levels - I can
tell from experience those younger kids are even more creative and imaginative. Last
year I had some honors Geometry students make videos that taught linear equations to
Algebra I students. I came up with some great results and not so great results. It really
depends on the technology you make available at the students fingertips. I think this
course has given us great resources which we can use to make interactive videos
without necessarily having to have a video camera. - Todd Alexander
Monique Porter
Scott Rolfs I love the idea of creating a story board for a particular era in history. Even some of my
most advanced students struggle with keeping events, timelines, and eras in the correct
order. Id imagine that creating a storyboard would be great for all students, especially
visual learners. - Trent A.

One of my inspirations for going into social studies education was from my 6th grade
history and science teacher. I remember our first project was to create a timeline of
recent history. We listened and watched Billy Joels We Didnt Start the Fire. We then
had to choose several items mentioned in the song to research as well as more recent
additions. We then turned our entire hallway into a timeline of recent events in history.
That was incredibly memorable. I think it would be even more memorable now with the
tech features we have available now. - Todd Alexander

Andrea Ruley I really like the commercial idea. That sounds like a lot of fun. You could have your
students advertise in a variety of ways, such as using social media, a class website,
starting an email chain, or posting QR codes around school. I think your students would
have a blast doing this. -Ben Cottrell

I really like your idea of creating a brochure. It reminded me of what my kindergartners
are doing in their regular classroom (I am music but I heard about it). They are using
apps such as Doodle Buddy and even MineCraft to create evacuation maps for our
school. This is an idea that you could also use. Then to make it go even further, create
evacuation maps for each class and give it to that class to post in their rooms in case of
emergencies. -Jena Hudson
Emilee Stumler I love the idea of having students create an interactive nonfiction book. I think the idea of
having links in their diagrams to further record their learning would be powerful. And
having them take the photo allows for so much more investment in their work.-Bobbi
Keinsley
An interactive book sounds pretty neat. This may include some extra teaching and work
but it would be nice if you include Blabberize to make the insects talk.-Brian Lindsey
George Taylor
Alan Wilson Alan I really like incorporating the students into the audio feed for your presentations. I
think as long as the students have a photo/video release on file with the school you
should be safe. It would be awesome if the families could respond or interact with the
presentations in some way...like maybe respond to how their student plays a role in their
family -Emilee Stumler

7.Finalizeyourideasandputthemintoaction!
Action is important even if you arent an expert in new tools yet. Students are pretty sharp and can help
you work through the technical parts of your new plan (and if they do help, that doesnt mean youre less of
a teacher!). Jump in with both feet, and even if it doesnt work out perfectly (even if it blows up in your
face), your students will probably appreciate your willingness to try new things.
Heads up: You will be asked to create & video a technology rich lesson for the W540 course. Get a head
start and try to start implementing more technology. Video some of your lessons so you can reflect on
them and improve them.
8.Beflexibleandbereadytochange.
Reflect on your new activities afterward. Ask your students what they liked about the activity and how
good it was for teaching them. If something flops early on in the new activity, be ready to revise it or even
try it again completely the next day. We dont have to be perfect. The acronym FAIL (First Attempt In
Learning) applies to teachers too!
Follow those steps and youll be well on your way to modifying your classes and redefining learning with
your students!
So get out there and modify! Try some new things and get innovative with technology! Your students will
appreciate it.
Share an experience where you tried technology in the classroom. How did it go? Did you have to make
adjustments?
Trent Ashcraft My school is fortunate to have one-to-one iPads, so technology is a regular part of
our day. What Ive been surprised by is how resistant my students are to using
technology. I recently had students search for a proposed constitutional amendment
online and then share a link to the website on Padlet. My students became very
frustrated very quickly. Right now they are working on a project in which they can
use Narrable, Powtoons, or a video making app to present their findings. A number
of students have been begging me to allow them to simply create a poster or do a
skit. I think this shows me that I need to spend more time integrating new
technology into instruction so that they are more familiar with its use before being
asked to create something themselves
Brian Lindsey I used polleverywhere as part of a learning station and the laptops I used were old and
not updated so only a few students were able to submit answers, so my adjustment was I
put the questions on a white board and students had to fill out a small piece of paper
and drop them into a bucket like a vote. (I like that. Always have a backup plan. As
awesome as technology is, it fails from time to time. I just remind myself to remain
flexible. - Bratcher)
Todd Alexander Last year in my honors geometry classes, I had my students become the teachers for
one unit. The students had to become experts in a particular topic, create an interactive
lesson on that topic, assign a homework assignment on that topic, and give a quiz over
the topic. The students were required to make their own PowerPoint of the topic using
image, video, and information from various resources (not just our textbook). I found the
project to be a nice change of pace for the class. Most of the students enjoyed having
the opportunity to teach. I had some issues with students not holding up their own
assigned part of the project. There were also issues with students keeping track of their
project assignments vs. the assignments given to them by other groups. I will do this in
the future as it was very engaging for the student body. However, I will have greater
expectations on responsibility for all students in completion of the project. I will also
have them utilize other tech resources other than just PowerPoint. I think my favorite
resource from this class is Tackk. I will probably have them do some planning or
resource gathering/collecting on a webpage like that.
Julie Bowman I showed my students how to use Prezi since one of their choices for their book report
project is to create a powerpoint. After showing the class, I had 6 students come and ask
me for help with it because they want to use it. They used it and presented wonderfully!
Anna-Marie Carr I showed my module 8 lesson, which was a powerpoint with screencast linking 2 videos,
with my students and they loved it. We watched it twice! They loved how I linked the
example videos. They are practicing cooperation and compromise in the classroom and
recognizing it when they see it happening.
Ben Cottrell I used Socrative to give quizzes in the past. It did not go well. But I learned that I
needed to give more questions with a single, concrete answer. After making that
adjustment, it has been a much better experience for me and the students.
Jeffrey Dalrymple
Elizabeth Galle We use ipads and the smart board daily in our classroom. The kids love to use our
technology that we have available. They love it because its all interactive. Just hard
because we only have 6 ipads and 2 smartboards for our 48 kiddos. The smairtboard is
used for interactive games of skills we have taught and ipads are used for academic
games to enhance skills.
Jena Hudson I use a decent amount of technology in my classroom with my older students. We use
apps such as Google Drive, Garage Band, Mad Pad, eBackpack, My Big Campus. I
have learned that you must be patient and flexible! I dont think I have ever had a lesson
that went seamless in regards to technology. There will be glitches, but it is so worth the
small struggles.
Bobbi Keinsley I use the Scholastic News app all the time to build some background knowledge and
enrichment in correlation to our reading. The biggest problem I had with this app is that
there are a lot of tools like highlighters, etc to use while reading that they would just end
up playing with. So we did some modeling on how to use these tools as resources not
toys and then I give them a response to text question to work on where they can use
these tools.
Latoya Malone Ive used clickers, but it was too time consuming and had to register every class I used it
with before I could move forward. I felt like I spent more time prepping than students
spent engaging in the activity. I also use my smartboard for interactive website every
other week to discuss the importance of fueling up with the right foods, caloric intake,
and exercise in order to blast off to Planet Power for making healthy choices. My
students love to play the game and I love when they play it because it is a self-ran
station that enhances my nutrition lesson from the beggining and gives them a
hands-on experience they will never forget.
Monique Porter I use a lot of technology in my classroom. recently my students used the SmartBoard
app on the ipads and the student computers to create quiz questions to use as a review
for our Math Summative assessment for quarter 1. They loved using Plickers and it was
great to see how well they grasped how to use the answer cards. I create games with
QRcodes and our media center just recently recieved a program called Letters Alive
which is a AR program that brings the alphabet, sight words, and picture cards to life.
Scott Rolfs I used Google presentation for a recent project with my students. They liked the fact it
was similar to PowerPoint (which most were already familiar with), and they liked the fact
they could work on it together - even at home, while they were apart - with the use of
comments, while they worked. For presentations, they shared their file with me onto
my Google Drive. I had some problems with student who did not do this correctly, and
when they came up to present on the Smartboard, I couldnt find their Presentation in my
Google Drive. The pause was a bit uncomfortable as I searched for it or had them
re-share it, but ended up ok and the other students didnt seem to mind. The
Presentations were very creative, and had most of the components I was looking for, and
they had fun.
Andrea Ruley I created the Google form for my class reflection on their oral presentations. It was really
tricky figuring out a way for students to complete the form and have their video
connected to it so it was their ready for their reflection. I struggled a bit figuring out a
way to connect them and settled on creating a link to a Gdrive file where all the videos
were stored. It worked ok, but I have now learned that posting them to a share site, of
sending them individually to each students gmail account could have also worked as
an option. The students enjoyed giving feed back on themselves this way.
Emilee Stumler
George Taylor

I put students into groups and had them doing different station activities in the gym.
One of the stations was a technology station where they had to work as a group to
research a P.E related website. As a group they had to create a paper telling me 6 facts
they learned from the site. I want to collaborate with our media specialist soon so that I
can add the use of Ipads in physical education.

Alan Wilson The Postermywall app worked better than the Fakemovieposter app. That attempt went
fair. I currently use Powerpoints with video & audio components. My students say they
like them. They make suggestions for improvement and get excited when I implement
their ideas.
