Analysis of an image


1 What is it?
We distinguish two-dimensional images (drawings, paintings, photographs, e.g.) and three-
dimensional images (sculptures, architecture, industrial products e.g.) 5


2 Material
Name the material. (oil on linen, watercolours, bronze, wood, e.g.) 5


3 Technique
Describe the technique. (drawing, painting with large brush, collage, e.g.) 5


4 What do you see?
Describe what you see in a detailed way. Imagine yourself on the phone with another person,
you have to give that other person a good idea of the image without seeing him/her. 5


5 Image aspects
By image aspects we mean the description of the different elements that form the image. We
distinguish tone, colour, shape, space and composition.

-Tone: includes light and shade, light direction, light and dark contrast, e.g. 2,5

-Colour: includes colour contrasts, harmony of colours, brightness, e.g. 2.5

-Shape: flat-spatial, figurative, decorative, simplified, distorted, e.g. 2,5

-Space: overlapping, cut off, reduction in size, foreshortening, plasticity, etc. 2,5

-Composition: basic shape, symmetrical/a-symmetrical, character, e.g. 2,5
