(Arise, Serbia)

ODE TO THE UPRISING OF THE SERBS

(To Serbia, her brave knights and children and, God bless him, her Voivode sir Georgije Petrovi
dedicated)

Arise, Serbia! Arise, empress,
And let your children gaze upon your face!
Turn their hearts and eyes to you,
And let them hear your sweet voices

Arise, Serbia!
Long have you slumbered,
Lain in the dark;
Now awake,
And rouse the Serbs!

Raise your imperial head high
So that earth and the sea once again recognize you,
Show Europe your beautiful face,
Shining and joyous, as the sight of the Morning Star;

Remember, our mother, your earlier glory,
Shame the heads of your enemies!
Chase the rabid janissary from Vracar,
He, who does not listen even to his own same emperor!

Now the will of heaven aids you,
And now a better future shows itself to you,
All your kindred wish you well,
and far-away peoples rejoice at your well-being;

Arise, Serbia! Our dear mother!
And become again what you once were!
With honesty your Serbian children call to you,
They, who bravely fight for you now;

Bosnia, your sister, looks at you,
and does not wish you any injury;
He who means you ill, does not fear God,
From whom resplendent aid arrives to you;

Herzeg's lang and the Black Mountain;
distant states, and the islands and the seas -
all upon you wish the aid of heavens,
all good souls rejoice for you;

And, as one, they chant:
Arise, Serbia,
Long have you slumbered,
Lain in the dark,
Now awake,
And rouse the Serbs!

Dositej Obradovi, 1804
