! Defines the level of excellence required by a design of a
specific environment
! Lays the foundation for the design concept and plan
! Your task create a programming doc for a single
monks cell (living space)
Overview of a Programming Document
! Includes the following sections :
1. Site Information (fact-finding)
2. User Information (character composite + activity map)

3. Programming statements :
! Mission Statement
! Goals

! Concept Diagrams
Mission Statement
! Describes the overall purpose or goal for the design
! Answers the question Why do we need to do this
project?
! Clearly written so that any person could understand it
(such as the client, banker, neighbor, designer, etc.)
Mission Statement Examples

product.
What is an Issue?
! Any matter, concern, question, or situation that
demands a design response in order for an environment
to be successful for its client and users
! Issues are discovered through fact-finding.

! The Mission or
! The Issues?
What is a Goal?
! A goal is a statement of intention.
! Goals move designers towards ACTION
! Goals illustrate a future state and guide design decisions

design needed.
! A formula for a goal :
! The project SHOULD (insert verb of intention such as

clear, simple, and exciting (descriptive phrase) circulation
system (noun) for members of the College of Design, as
well as for visitors (noun descriptors).
What are Performance Requirements?
! A statement about the measureable level of function
that a designed environment must provide for a goal to
be met.
! Describes how the environment must behave.
! Must be specific, operational, & measureable.
! Must be PROACTIVE & POSITIVE.
How to write a Performance Requirement ...
! Should answer the question How is the function of this
goal to be implemented?
! A formula for a performance requirement :
! The (insert noun part of the environment being dealt with)
SHOULD (insert descriptive, measurable phrase for how the
noun used should function).
Performance Requirement Examples

members with a high degree of control of interaction
and distraction within their work/study places.
! PR: Visibility into the work/study place should be high,
with controls to allow for times when the area should not
be disturbed in order to increase productivity.
What are Concept Diagrams?
! Concepts are diagrammatic solutions that solve the
performance requirements, goals, and issues in the
environment.
! Answers the question What relationship between
physical things will most likely insure the level of function
required by the performance requirement?
! Simple, with strong visual impact, and a caption.
