Parents and students in search of a top-rated middle school
need look no further than Black Hawk Middle School.
Based on test scores, statewide rankings and parent
feedback, Black Hawk Middle is one of the top middle
schools in Minnesota. Located in Eagan, Minnesota and
serving grades 6-8, Black Hawk scored very high on the
GreatSchools ranking and received 5 stars in a parents
survey.
The 17:1 ratio of students to teachers is very attractive,
but parents also rated the school very high for principal
leadership, teacher quality and parent involvement,
among other criteria. In each of the last 3 years, Black
Hawk students have exceeded the statewide average on
standardized tests (MCA-II) for math and reading.
According to one parent posting, Black Hawk has
Black Hawk Middle Rated a Top Minnesota School
an excellent curriculum and treats students with
respect. A student posting commented favorably on
teacher involvement, after-school activities and tutoring
opportunities.
The GreatSchools ranking is a clear indication that Black
Hawk is serving its student population very well. This
service compares Black Hawk and other schools in the
state on a variety of factors, using the MCA-II test data as a
primary reference point. While other factors come into play
for a given student and school, the high ranking for Black
Hawk is an indication that the faculty and administration are
doing a great job.
The Rosemount-Eagan-Apple Valley community is
fortunate to have many excellent schools for our children.
Congratulations to Black Hawk Middle School for being
among the best in Minnesota.
Erik Gorsuch is an Eastview alum from
the class of 2006. My favorite memory
from Eastview was the Welcome Back
Dance my freshman year. I was a little
freshman just starting high school and
I got to dance with a bunch of older
girls! Needless to say, I felt pretty cool!
After graduating from Eastview, Erik
began his college career at Arizona
State University, but after one semester
realized he had to come back to the
University of Minnesota: You cant beat
Minnesota, even if Arizona weather is
amazing. Erik will be graduating from
the U of M in May of 2010.
He is also an agent for New York Life
where he assists people with long-term
Meet Erik Gorsuch
nancial planning. In the future Erik
plans on owning his own business,
becoming a managing partner for
New York Life, or starting his own
venture capital rm. He would also
like to get involved in commercial real
estate; one of his dreams is to build a
large resort. I love life, have very big
dreams and believe that anyone can
achieve their dreams with hard work
and persistence. My dream is to use
my success to help out as many people
as possible. I realize how fortunate I
am for growing up with a great family,
in a great neighborhood, while going
to some of the top public schools
(EVHS, Falcon Ridge, Thomas Lake);
and I want to give other kids the same
opportunities that I had. Erik adopted
his dog Carter in August last year. He is
awesome to have around because hes
always so happy and energetic.

By the time this newsletter goes to
print, the rst annual EVHS Alumni
Softball tournament will have been
played. The softball tournament
fundraiser is an idea Erik got one night
while going through his senior year
yearbook. He realized how much fun
he had at Eastview and how many of
his classmates he hadnt seen for a
while. He thought a softball tournament
would be a good way to get everyone
back together while also giving back
to the community. Proceeds from the
tournament were donated to EVCF.
Eriks friend, Kevin Rasachak,
organized the tournament with him.
Their plan is to make it an annual event
with even more teams to raise more
money for the Eastview Community
Foundation. We thank Erik, Kevin and
all the softball players and spectators
for their generous participation.
Goodbye....
Two board members will be leaving the
Eastview Commnunity Foundation Board

Jodi Hanson is an EVCF Board Member. She is a member

of Eastview High Schools administrative team and her
husband, Eric Vande Berg, is a Social Studies teacher and
Varsity Football coach. She stays busy with her three small
children. She is a graduate of Rosemount HIgh School
and Mankato State University and is currently working on a
Specialist Degree in Educational Administration.
What advice do you have for people considering helping
the Eastview Community Foundation?
I once read something that has stuck with meDont do
nothing because you cant do everything. Do something.
Anything. I think people feel they have to contribute in a
big way, but the reality is that all of the little acts people do
every day truly add up. Contact any EVCF board member
to nd out how you can help make a difference, whether its
once, or on a regular basis. We appreciate all the help we
can get!
What did you want to be when you grew up?
I always knew Id be an educator. I love learning and love
sharing the a-ha moments others have when learning takes
place for them as well.
What are you reading?
Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell
Whats your work philosophy?
You have to love what you do. Maybe not every hour of
every daybut at the end of the day, you have to feel as
though youve spent the day doing something you love and

Alumni Softball Tournament
Kevin Rasachak and Erik Gorsuch,
both Eastview Alumni, organized the
rst alumni softball tournament on July

ment to connect and catch-up with the
friends we spent four great years with
during high school, while giving back to
the community we grew up in!. For the
rst year, the tournament had 4 teams
of players. They hope to make this an
annual event each summer!
