How can I save money for something I want?
Objective(s):

understand that money is earned by hard work.
Students will explain the concept of how saving money is waiting to buy
something so that one day they can buy something more valuable and more
important in the future.

Prior Learning/Prior Thinking: - The students will have read, "A Chair For My Mother" two days
before this lesson. Every day the students will be working with different parts of the story. All students
should know major key elements of the story.
LESSON IMPLEMENTATION
Procedures
Anticipatory Set (ReviedPreview): The students will all sit down on the mat in front of the smart
board. During this time the I will ask if the students can retell parts of the story. After students have retold
some parts, the teacher will select one student to turn the pages on the smart board.
1. Purpose Statement: Before starting the book on the smart board I will say, 'o When the story is
playing all of you should be listening and thinking about what you would be something you can
save up money for and how would you do that?".
2. After the story is done a short discussion of the story will take place focusing on these four
uestions. What did her family want to What were different wavs the familv saved

after buying the chair?
3' Once the discussion has taken place the students will stay seated on the mat while the worksheet
"Saving Money Story Board" is explain. The students will need to fill out the four different
boxes. Each box will need a picture and sentences to go with.
4. After the directions are given the students will be able to go back to their seats to work on the
worksheet. If students have questions they are able to ask another student at their table or the
teacher. Each stuilent though should be working at their table spot area and not moving around
the room.
5. When the student completes the worksheet they will need to have it looked over by a teacher then
the student can put it in the finished worked basket and free read or complete a word search.
Closure: At the end of the lesson a discussion will take place to see how well the students understood the
idea of saving money to buy something later, and the idea of in order to earn money students must work
hard. The four ideas from the worksheet will be discussed and students will share ih"i, id"u, on how to
save money.

Reflection
Overall I think the lesson went well. I think the students really understood the main idea
oftVou have to eam money and save for something you want. However if I was going to reteach
this lesson I would not use the SmartBoard to tell the story. The story took about 15 minutes to
read on the SmartBoard and the kids were having a hard time sitting still looking at the board for
that long. Since it is a well-known story, I would try looking on YouTube for the author or
someone else to be reading it. I would pick something that was entertaining for the kids to hear,
instead of a monotone speaker reading the story to the students. I think the students enjoyed the
story however it was hard to keep their attention. A few things that went well in the lesson
though were having a worksheet that was developmentally appropriate for 2"d graders and having
a fun word search for them to do afterwards. The writing worksheet was perfect because the

ti *uu u.ar1)
student were able to fill out the whole thing without much guidance from me. Also the way the
'1d'
k-LA-"i
boxes were label on the worksheet students urere+asUy+A+e to understand them. By having a
word search at the end for those students who finished early it made things a lot easier and kept
the room quiet. The last time I did a lesson I had the students free read when they were done and
the classroom became very loud once a few people finished their work because they didn't want
to free read. Having the word search at the end keep those students still quietly working.
