History of South America
-In 1946, Juan Peron is elected president of Argentina and establishes authoritarian
regime in Argentina
-In 1948, organization of American States formed
-In 1952, Juan Peron was elected as the second term president of Argentina
-In 1959, Fidel Castro gets power in Cuba
-In 1961, The United States breaks diplomatic relations with Cuba
-In 1962, the Cuban missile crisis is resolved
-In 1973, military forces overthrow Allende as president
-In 1980, a movement toward democracy took place in Latin America
-In 1990, Twenty-nine Latin American cities have over a million people
-In 2001, Alejandro Toledo is elected president of Peru


Immigration
-In the colonial era, most of the immigration consisted of Spanish and
Portuguese settlers, as well as some from France and the Netherlands
-Large numbers of black African slaves were imported
-Africans were purchased by the sugar plantations in the West Indies, where
life was very short or put in plantations in Brazil, which were much healthier
-A large scale immigration took place from the 1840s to 1914, many people
went to Argentina, Brazil, Cuba, Venezuela, Uruguay, and Chile
-Most of the new immigrants came from Italy, Spain, Britain, and Germany and
some from some Japan and China
Populations in Peru
-In 2011 there were 29,549,517 people in Peru
-Now there are roughly 30,469,221 people that live in Peru
-There growth rate is 1.02%
Populations in Chile
-The population of Chile in 2000 was 15,153,797
-The growth rate was 7.9%
-In 2013 it was roughly 17.4 million people
Populations in Venezuela
-The population in Venezuela in 2006 was 27,030,656
-In 2013, in Venezuela the estimated population was 29.28 million
-There growth rate is 1.6%

Living Conditions in South America
-4/5 of the population lives in towns or cities
-Poverty is very high
-Malnutrition and poverty are especially widespread in the dry interior of the
northeast
-Most rural families live in small 1 or 2 room houses that are made of stone or
adobe(Roofs were made of red or orange clay tiles)
- Many people live in brazil(because it is the biggest country) the people that
live there work on large plantations or own a small farm
Languages
Spanish is spoken by 60% of the population
Portuguese is spoken by 34% of the population
The other 6% are Dutch, Italian, French or English
Religion in South America

-Pentecostalism was first introduced to Latin America by American
missionaries in the early 20th century now the movement here is now bigger
than ever
-In 2005 Pentecostalism represent 13%, about 75 million, of Latin Americas
population of nearly 560 million altogether

Air Pollution
-Many counties use unleaded gas but in south America they choose to
go with leaded gas because it was cheaper
-Leaded gas pollutes the air more
-In South America the pollution exceeds the world health organization
limit of pollution
-85% of child diseases in South America are from the unclean air
-Indoors pollution exceeds the limit as well due to indoor fire and
tobacco smoke

Clean water
-77 million people lack access to safe water
-The percentage of people in Latin America and the Caribbean with direct
access to water has increased from 33% of the population in 1960 to 85% by
the year 2000
-there are 51 million rural residents and 26 million urban residents that don't
have water
-Sewage from less than 14% of south American houses are treated at a
sanitation plant
-The poor people in South America paid between 1.5 and 2.8 times more for
their water than moderate to wealthy families paid
Diseases
-In the early 1990s, the Chagas disease was ranked as the most
serious parasitic disease in South America
-today it is estimated that 11 million people in 15 South American
countries are infected with Chagas disease
-to try and prevent and control Chagas, South America launched a
control/elimainative process in 1991 under the leadership of the Pan
American health organization
