Air Pollution -Many counties use unleaded gas but in south America they choose to go with leaded gas because it was cheaper -Leaded gas pollutes the air more -In South America the pollution exceeds the world health organization limit of pollution -85% of child diseases in South America are from the unclean air -Indoors pollution exceeds the limit as well due to indoor fire and tobacco smoke
Clean water -77 million people lack access to safe water -The percentage of people in Latin America and the Caribbean with direct access to water has increased from 33% of the population in 1960 to 85% by the year 2000 -there are 51 million rural residents and 26 million urban residents that don't have water -Sewage from less than 14% of south American houses are treated at a sanitation plant -The poor people in South America paid between 1.5 and 2.8 times more for their water than moderate to wealthy families paid Diseases -In the early 1990s, the Chagas disease was ranked as the most serious parasitic disease in South America -today it is estimated that 11 million people in 15 South American countries are infected with Chagas disease -to try and prevent and control Chagas, South America launched a control/elimainative process in 1991 under the leadership of the Pan American health organization
