Chapter 1: Akiak
Focus on story structure and summarizing. Drawing
inferences and fluency practice. Academic
vocabulary practice.
Chapter 2: Grandfathers Journey
Focus on authors viewpoint and character
viewpoints. Prediction and inference. Using details
from the text to understand story characters.
Chapter 3: Finding the Titanic
Focus on text organization and monitor and clarify
story information. Relevant vocabulary practice.
Understanding historical events, their cause and
effects.
Chapter 4: By the Shores of Silver Lake
Focus on main idea and supporting details. Forming
questions about the text and historical events.
Novel study on The Golden Goblet will cover text



organization, noting details, character, setting and
character conflict and resolution. Grade appropriate
language and vocabulary studies. And referring to
details and information from the text to summarize
the story as it progresses and make inferences about
future events that may come.
Instructional Strategies (Cooperative Learning, Role Play, Graphic
Organizers, Video, Jigsaw)
Students will use various graphic organizers for each text that is read during
the unit.
A graphic organizer will be used for each chapter of the novel study.
Video about ancient Egypt will be shown for background knowledge relating
to the novel The Golden Goblet.
Cooperative learning will be use daily. Students will work in teams to
complete their comprehension maps for each text read.
Acronyms to practice vocabulary. Various other vocabulary games, practice
sheets and writing assignments based on vocabulary practice.
Visuals for vocabulary, video clips and audio recordings of the stories to help
with fluency and comprehension.
Gardners theory of multiple intelligences. Teaching the same concept from
different intelligences for better comprehension and depth of knowledge.
Choral, popcorn, echo, silent sustained and various other reading practices.
Cloze procedures for vocabulary practice.
Learning centers
Journal responses to text using I statements or answering questions that
help connect reading to personal experiences.
