Unit Name: Elements & Principles of Design

What are the elements and principles of design and how
can using them enhance artworks?
How can I understand the difference between the
various principles and elements?
How can I become an expert on one principle or
element and make a strong artwork exemplifying it?
(1A/1B) Connections (prior/future learning):
Students are familiar with elements and principles of
design from past art classes
(1A) Common Core/State Standards:
NMVA-I

(1E) Other considerations (modifications,
accommodations, acceleration, ELL, etc.
Students who are struggling will get more one-on-
one attention from the teacher
Students who are advance will be allowed to
either make an extra piece or will be encouraged
to create a larger/more difficult piece

(1D) Resources/Materials:
Teacher: Power Point and Hand out on Design Elements and
Principles, Images of paintings, etc.
Students:
Material of choice
(1F) Assessment (How will you monitor progress and know students have successfully met outcomes? What happens
when students understand and when they dont understand?

Daily: Daily observations of artwork using design element/principle.
This Week: Final piece

TUESDAY 8/19
(1C) Learning Target: For students to be able to understand
the elements and principles of design. TSW know this when
he/she can correctly respond to cold calling.
(1C) Do Now: In a Do Now square, do a drawing of
either:
--The repetition of 4 different shapes
--15 or more curvy lines


I. Go over Elements & Principles of Design
PowerPoint
II. Hand out worksheet/assignment
III. Show students where are materials are/how to
clean up/etc.
IV. Pick your element/principle to focus on
V. Start sketching
Homework: Bring sketchbook and other supplies ASAP!

WEDNESDAY 8/20
