Annotated Bibliography: Mass Shooting in US
In the past , mass shootings in the United States have become more recognized as a
public health concern in our society. In 2012, the mass killings that occurred at the movie
theater in Aurora Colorado and at the public school in Newtown Connecticut made the top
news story during that year, surpassing the public and politicians attention urging things to
be done and changed. There is so much to learn to have a clear point of view of the possible
solution.
Bawagan, Juanita. "US Government Targets Gun Research." CMAJ: Canadian Medical
Association Journal 185.9 (2013): E371-E372. Academic Search Premier. Web. 5 Aug. 2014.
Summary. Bawagan summarizes the problems with gun research and the lack funding from
the US Government. In 2007 Research in Gun Control was cut back from the US Centers for
Disease Control Prevention (CDC) leaving prevention on gun violence on hold for a long time.
After the Sandy Hook Shooting, President Obama proposed to bring back research on gun
control which includes a budget of 10 million dollars for the CDC. Providing these funds would
assure the development of future violent death registry that would be expanded to 50 states
through out the US.
Evaluation. When it comes to find the solution , there is a need of research and money is
essential for this research to take place through out the US, because Mass Shooting dont just
happen in US , they happen everywhere.
Reflection. This article gave me a really an idea about the problem about the lacking of funding
on gun Shooting ,and the need of funding from the US Government to fight the problem with
Mass Shooting.
At the same time if funding does not get approved , we wont have the ability to find trends with
this existence problem.
Fox, James Alan, and Monica J. DeLateur. "Mass Shootings in America: Moving Beyond
Newtown." Homicide Studies 18.1 (2014): 125-145. Academic Search Premier. Web. 5 Aug.
2014.
Summary. Fox and DeLateur summarizes some of the myths about Mass Shooting and how the
proposal of changes are not necessary valid. For example the assumption of having mental
services is the answer for the mass shooting in the US, which would not be the only answer to
these problems.
The article concludes that any small steps that we can take towards taking any prevention
measurements with mass shooting is better than nothing. Extreme steps will involve extreme
measurement like the abolishment of the second amendment but the society that we live in may
never consider those extreme steps.
Evaluation. These article relates facts and it is well written, it provides real data about research
on the myths of gun shooting. It is truly objective and leaves the conclusion open to more
possible solutions.
Reflection. It is useful to have an idea of what myths are taking into account to fight the issue
of mass shooting among the population . This article provide me with a different view of how
many possible solutions we could have for this subject .
Rosenberg, Jessica. "Mass Shootings and Mental Health Policy." Journal Of Sociology & Social
Welfare 41.1 (2014): 107-121. Academic Search Premier. Web. 5 Aug. 2014.
Summary. Rosenberg summarizes that mental health is not the big issue with the subject, that
there are researches that show that mental ill people are not violent, the problem mainly is with
substance abuse and violence . Leaving out the possibility of approaching the issue with only
new mental health policies.
Evaluation. She was very persuasive and clear about explaining the studies and research that
have look mental health people not being violent and the implications that knew federal and
states legislations could have with the privacy laws for people seeking mental health.
Reflection. Besides making a good point of the mental health relation with mass shooting , it
helps me to leave the idea out that mental health is the only cause to Mass shooting. Also make
me analyses other possible causes of the problems.

Davies, G. K. (2008). Connecting the Dots: Lessons from the Virginia Tech Shootings. Change,
40(1), 8-15.
Summary. Davies summarizes the events leading to the Virginia Tech Shooting in 2007, going
over the main points that let to these events to be the most deadly shooting in the US. He points
out problems with the university structure in handling Federal Education and Health Privacy
Law (HIPA).
Evaluation. This article enriches my perspective to see how controversial the topic of sharing
important or probably crucial information to avoid possible mass shooting for the HIPA Law is ,
related this article with others sources I would say we need to more research to know better the
pattern or define better the profile of mass shooter to develop a more efficient plan of action of
the subject.
Reflection. The article give me a new perspective about the delicate situation on sharing crucial
information for HIPA law, research would be the best answer to define the real pattern of mass
shooters.
Cummings, Janet R., Wen Hefei, and Benjamin G. Druss. "Improving Access to Mental
Health Services For Youth In The United States." JAMA: Journal Of The American Aug Medical
Association 309.6 (2013): 553-554. Academic Search Premier. Web. 5. 2014.
Summary. Cumming summarizes about the need of improving access to Mental
Health Services for Youth in the Unites States . Policy makers have called for a more
critical examination of the mental health treatment system , and advocates are rallying
around federal legislation that would strengthen community based mental health services
specially for children and adolescents.
Evaluation. This article give a screenshot of the importance of a well-developed mental health
system in schools that could prevent mass shooting over the time. This article also shows
that there is large gaps in geographic access for mental health services for youth . There
is also shortages of mental health clinicians, lack of knowledge about mental health
problems, available treatment and stigma.
Reflection. Improving the access to mental health services for this vulnerable population will
require an ongoing national dialogue, there are financial barriers in our current system.
There are small things that we can do as a whole community .
Jorm, Anthony F, and Nicola J Reavley. "Public Belief That Mentally Ill People Are Violent: Is
The USA Exporting Stigma To The Rest Of The World?." Australian & New Zealand Journal
Of Psychiatry 48.3 (2014): 213-215. Academic Search Premier. Web. 5 Aug. 2014.
Summary. Jorm and Reavley is connecting the dots between the public belief that mentally ill
people are violent and how the situation in US is exporting stigma to rest of the world. It
give us the conclusion that while violent acts are more common in people with untreated
mental illness, this factor cannot fully explain the widespread public belief that mentally
ill people are dangerous and violent .
Evaluation. This article clearly give us a facts about the real relationship between mentally ill
people and violent and the stigma that USA is exporting to the rest of the world.
Reflection. The information of this article helps me to understand better and create my own
position about the relation of mentally ill people and violence in Mass Shooting . Seeing
facts and the real relation between them, it is helpful to form an own perspective and
propose accurate solutions to the issue.
