Activity Plan

1. Identifying Information
- Friendship/Relationship Literacy Theme
- Just Grandpa and Me Puppet story
- My Book of Friends story and Activity

2. A. Behavioral Objectives
- The children will watch and listen to the story Just Grandpa and Me through teacher
reading and puppet. They will predict the story, as well as tell a story through drawings
of a family member of theirs. They will also be read My Book of Friends, and discuss
that as well. Through listening and partner reading, they will work with their partner to
create a story of what they would do together on the playground.
B. Foundations/Standards
- EL.K.2.2 Use pictures and context to aid comprehension and to draw conclusions or
make predictions about story content.
- EL.K.2.3 Generate and respond to questions (who, what, where).
- EL.K.4.3 Write using pictures, letters, and words.

3. Planning Thought Processes
A. Context of Exploration
- These stories and activities were chosen to develop or reinforce friendships and
relationships. This will be done early in the school year to motivate students for
healthy successful friendships with unknown children in the classroom.
B. Rationale
- This activity was chosen to allow students to express themselves and tell their own
stories with family members and newly established friendships.
C. Anticipating Challenges
- Shy children may struggle to break out of their shells in order to create new
friendships. To counteract this, I will motivate students with the reading as well as
being silly with information about myself.

4. Materials
Just Grandpa and Me book as well as puppets
My Book of Friends book
Premade blank journals to create stories

5. Activity Procedure
A. Motivation/Introduction
- Before reading Just Grandpa and Me, students will make predictions to what they think
the story is about, what will the two characters do together, what kind of things do they
do with family members.
- I will then show them the puppets that I intend to use and introduce each of them.
- Students will be able to ask questions about the story.

B. Concept exploration
- Students will begin the day with this lesson. It will be done within the first month of
school starting, allowing some time for students to get comfortable around each other.
- Every student will sit on the rug designated for story time in the center of the room
and listen to story with puppets.
- The children will then break off into partners to make up their own stories.
- After telling their own stories, students will listen to the reading of My Book of
Friends

C. Inquiry (Open Ended Questions)
- Questions listed above in the Motivation/Introduction section
- What predictions do you have about the story Just Grandpa and Me? Who do you
think the main characters will be? What ideas will the characters come up with for
adventures? What kind of adventures do you go on with your family?
- While working on their own stories, they will be asked what kind of adventure they
are focusing on. Is this a real story, or a fun adventure you would like to do?
- After reading the story My Book of Friends, students will discuss the different
relationships in the book. What kind of things do they do with their aunt, sister,
brother, mom, dad, friend, or pet?
- Students will break off into partners to create a story of what they would do together
on an adventure. Where would they like their adventure to be? Is it reachable or a
completely made-up story? What kind of pictures will the story have?

D. Closure
- What did the students like about the stories?
- Would anyone want to share their story with their partner?

E. Assessment
- Upon completion of the story, the students understood the value of friendship and
relationship. They will also understand that new friends are not too difficult to make.
- After completing to stories they created, students will be able to tell the story and match
the pictures with the story.
- The students were able to answer questions referring to characters in the story.
Extension Ideas
- There are many different stories, whether fiction or nonfiction, about friendships.
Students will have designated times to get to know other students and learn things that
they may have in common. Also, students will be encouraged to socialize with different
classmates during recess.

Enhancement Activity Who could be a friend?
- The children were introduced to new ideas of people in the community (police,
firefighters, teachers, etc.
- Those that were introduced made appearances to read to the students on a weekly basis
throughout summer library at Cowan Elementary

Dear families,
The students of Summer Library have been introduced to multiple celebrities from the
community. Those celebrities, a Cowan Fire Department Chief, an Indiana State Trooper,
Cowan Elementary 4
th
grade teacher, read multiple stories to the children that attended. Along
with the reading, students were able to ask any questions, relating to the story or the profession
of the celebrity, to further their knowledge on the subject.
Attached is a reaing checklist for parents to use with their children in order to further
their literacy skills. Each session, students will be able to choose from a reward bag upon
completion of reading goals signed off by you, the parent or guardian.

I really enjoyed doing this lesson with the children. Although a small school with parents
that I am familiar with due to attending that school as well, I learned a lot with the new children I
was able to teach to. I feel that that lesson went well and the children enjoyed it. I set it up for a
classroom setting, but only had 6 children in attendance when I led. I also attended other days
when the mentioned celebrities were reading to the children.
The students were very encouraging when presenting this lesson to them. I went into the
day expecting to be overly encouraging due to the students not knowing me, but they were on
board from the beginning.
Overall, I will be using this lesson in the future. Summer library was a great way for me
to get myself into action with students that were not familiar with me. Because of the
unfamiliarity between the students and myself, I fully expected a different reaction from the
students. They reacted as if they were ready to read more. Unfortunately, I ran out of time for
the day, but students were encouraged to find stories about friendships and venture out of their
comfort zone when meeting to peers.

Name of the school/day care:
Cowan Elementary Summer Library

Your name:
Tammy

Did the presentation last between 20-30 minutes? If not, how long did it last?
40 minutes

Did the presenter have a theme? What was it?
Yes. Creating friendships.

Did the presenter offer parents anything to take home? If so, what?
Yes. He created a reading checklist for parents to use with their children. The chart allowed
parents and children to record what has been read and return it to receive prizes.

Briefly describe the presentation.

He read two stories to the children (My Book of Friends and Just Grandpa and Me). He had
students break into groups to create a couple of their own stories using crayons and markers.
The students were given the opportunity to share their creations with the rest of the students and
parents in attendance.

What would you like to suggest to this presenter?

I could tell he was a little nervous in the beginning, but he related well to the students. They
loved his different voices when telling the stories. Other than opening up, he had nothing to
worry about.
