J unk Basket/Gauge Ring

The combination of a junk basket and a gauge ring performs two functions
simultaneously. The basket removes debris from the hole, while the ring gauges
the hole before running tools such as bridge plugs or packers whose ODs are
close to the ID of the casing. Before the combination is run, the gauge ring is made
up onto the outside of the baskets mouth to create one unit from the two pieces.
Different ring sizes can be used, depending on the casing size.
An important feature is the ability of both the basket and the gauge ring to slide
freely along the center shaft of the tool. When run in the hole, the basket/ring unit
easily slides to the top part of the shaft, allowing the debris to enter the bottom
mouth of the tool. When the unit reaches bottom, the operator quickly pulls out of
the hole, slamming the basket down to the end of the shaft. This action creates a
metal-to-metal seal with the bottom bull plug and traps all the debris inside. At this
point there must be no further downward movement with the cable, or the tool has
to be returned to bottom and the procedure repeated.
The junk basket/gauge ring is typically run with a gamma ray and casing collar
locator. Because of the junk baskets construction, running a jar of some sort with
the tool is recommended. The jar will help free the tool should the close tolerance
of the gauge ring to the casing cause the tool to become stuck.
