Math Integrated Lesson Plan

Title: Learning Greater than, Less than, & Equal to Signs.


Math Topic: Number & Operations
Grade Level: Grade 1
Materials: Xylophone, number cards, sign cards, original song with lyrics-
When youre hungry, you want more
Chomp the 8, not the 4.
The pointy end shows its less.
If its equal, theres no stress.
Objectives:
Standards: 111.3. Grade 1 (2) Number and operations. The student applies mathematical
process standards to represent and compare whole numbers, the relative position and magnitude
of whole numbers, and relationships within the numeration system related to place value. The
student is expected to:
- represent the comparison of two numbers to 100 using the symbols >, <, or =.
Procedures:
-First the Greater ThanEqual To song will be taught using the Rote Song Procedure.
-The teacher will sing the song alone, having the children listen carefully.
-The teacher will demonstrate a macro beat, and ask the students to keep a beat while she sings it
again , alone.
-The teacher will demonstrate a micro beat, and ask the students to keep a beat while she sings
the song again, alone.
-The teacher will ask a set of questions to assess the students musical knowledge and content
based knowledge.
- The teacher will tell the students to audiate the song after it has been sung to them one more
time. Teacher will sing to students again, alone, and then cue them with the starting pitch so that
they can audiate the song themselves.
-After having the students audiate the song, ask students to sing for you. Listen for any
mistakes.
-After successfully teaching the song to students, choose 6 individuals. Ask them to stand in
pairs at different parts of the room.
-Hand out different numbers to the first 2 pairs of people. The last pair of people will have cards
that read the same number.
-Choose 3 other people to demonstrate their knowledge. Tell each student to stand between the
pair of people and do the appropriate sign with their arms, making the mathematical statement
true. The > sign will be shown indicating the greater number is standing to the left. The < sign
will be shown indicating the lesser number is standing to the left. The equal sign will be shown
indicating the pair of people have the same number/value.
-Ask students to say OR write out the mathematical statements for each example. Example-
Five is greater than 2. Three is less than 6. Four is equal to 4.
Assessments.
The teacher will ask the following questions to assess the students musical knowledge:
-What is the resting tone of the song?
- How did the song progress? When did you hear the songs melody climb up? When
did you hear the songs melody climb down?
-What instrument was the song played on?
- What meter is the song played in?
The teacher will ask the following questions to assess the students content based knowledge:
-Does the opening of the sign eat the bigger number or smaller number?
-Does the pointy end of the sign face the bigger number or the smaller number?
-What does the equal sign mean?
- Would 2+3 be greater than or less than 3+3?
These questions will be answered by each individual student on a sheet of paper, which will then
be passed up to the front for grading.
