Design your own Lab using the Iodine Clock Reaction IB HL

Purpose: Design and conduct an investigation that tests the impact of a particular factor on the
reaction rate of a chemical system.
Demo: Your teacher will do a demo of a specific chemical system the iodine clock reaction.
The materials list gives you a break-down of how she built the system. It will be a good place to start
your work.
If you were absent for the demo, check out this video online:

Directions:
(1) Select a factor that may influence the rate of a reaction. Develop a scientific question around this
specific factor.
(2) Design an investigation that will answer your question. Keep in mind the characteristics of a well-
designed investigation. You must be able to identify the independent, dependent, and controlled
variables.
(3) Conduct your investigation to collect enough data that you can summarize your findings and draw
some conclusions.
(4) Be prepared to share your results with the class on Friday. Your presentation* should be 5
minutes or less and needs to include:
Question
Procedure Visual; Identify IV, DV, and at least 5 variables you controlled
Significant Data
Conclusion Claims and Evidence
* I suggest producing an overhead transparency, but am open to other technologies (document
camera; Powerpoint). Dont spend a lot of outside time on this it is an EXPLORE activity.
