How to Communicate between a PanelView Plus and a MicroLogix

This technote details how to communicate between a PanelView Plus 1000 and a MicroLogix 1500 LRP.

Setting up your hardware:
This is a recommended con!iguration o! the sstem" and the one used in this technote.
The parts used in this con!iguration are#

0 Please note that a Straight&Through serial cable must be used to communicate with the (,MM port o! a
PanelView Plus. This is because the PanelView Plus is considered a 1ata (ommunication +2uipment

5! ou want to connect our PanelView Plus to the 6pin mini 15. port 3channel 04 !ound on an o! the
MicroLogix" then ou can use the cable $%11&.($1" which is a 6pin mini 15. to 7 pin 1&Shell straight&
through cable. This technote uses a MicroLogix 1500 LRP because the two (,MM ports o! the MicroLogix
means the user can go online to the MicroLogix while it is still connected to the PanelView Plus. Please see
technote 81710% 9 :PanelView" MicroLogix ; SL( RS$/$ (ables< !or more in!ormation on di!!erent cabling
connections !or a MicroLogix and a PanelView Plus.
Setting up your MicroLogix:

Stop and delete all o! our 1?1 dri-ers.
?rom the a-ailable dri-ers select RS$/$ 1?1 de-ices" :@dd .ew><
Press the @uto&(on!igure button then ,A.
Bou now should ha-e a linC to our MicroLogix.

,pen RSLogix 500.
,pen the .RSS proDect ou wish to use !or our MicroLogix. ,r ou can use this one.

8o to the (omms &= Eho @cti-e 8o ,nline dialog" and select the MicroLogix ou wish to download to.
1ownload our program and go online.
Lea-ing the MicroLogix in remote run mode" close RSLogix 500.
5n RSLinx" 8o to :(ommunications &= (on!igure 1ri-ers>< and Stop the 1?1 dri-er. This allows
RSView Studio to communicate with the MicroLogix -ia its own" built in RSLinx +nterprise.
Setting up your PanelView Plus:
PanelView:
The PanelView Plus needs an 5P address in the same subnet as the P(.
To obtain our P(Fs 5P address" go to :Start &= Run< tpe :cmd< and press oC. 5n the command prompt"
tpe :ipcon!ig< and hit enter. MaCe a note o! our 5P address and subnet masC.
8o to the main con!iguration screen o! our PanelView Plus.
Git Terminal Settings &= .etworCs and (ommunications &= .etworC (onnections &= .etworC @daptors &=
'uilt in +thernet (ontroller. Press the :5P @ddress< 'utton.
5P @ddress# Same as our P(" +H(+PT !or the last number. 5! there are an other de-ices on the
networC" maCe sure it has a di!!erent 5P address to these too.
Subnet MasC# Same as our P(.
8atewa# Lea-e as de!ault 30.0.0.04
Reset our PanelView Plus to appl the changes to our 5P address.
RSView Studio:
,pen the RSView M+ proDect ou wish to use" or create a new one.
?irst" set up communications. 5n the application explorer" double clicC on :RSLinx +nterprise &=
(ommunication setup<.
(hoose the :(reate a .ew (on!iguration< option.
1elete an dri-ers except the +thernet one.
Inder the Local Tab" create a Serial 1?1 dri-er 3right clicC on the name o! our computer and select
:@dd 1ri-er<.4
Select the (omm port ouFre using" select :SL( or MicroLogix< under the 1e-ice !ield. Select :auto&
(on!iguration< and hit ,A.
5! ou open the new dri-er" ou should see our MicroLogix 1e-ice. Bou should also be able to see the
PanelView Plus under the +thernet dri-er. 5! not" !or either de-ice" checC RSLinx has still stopped the
dri-er" checC the cabling then checC the de-ices ha-e power. RechecC our 5P settings.
The Local tab is now con!igured" which has the settings !or connecting the P( to the other de-ices.
.ow ou need to con!igure the Target tab" which has settings !or connecting the PanelView Plus to its
de-ices. Right clicC on the computer icon o! the Target Tab" and select :@dd 1ri-er<. Ise the Serial
1?1 dri-er again. The de-ice is again a SL( or MicroLogix. Ise @uto&(on!igure.
InliCe the local tab" ou ha-e to add de-ices oursel! on the Target tab. Right clicC on the 1?1 dri-er
and select :@dd de-ice<. The MicroLogix is located under :P((( 1G)65 de-ices &= SL( 1G)65
1e-ices &= 1%*1&xxxx x@ MicroLogix 1500 LRP" MicroLogix 1500 LRP<. Bou can call it whate-er ou
want" but unless ou changed the node number o! the MicroLogix" the node number will still be 1.
.ow we ha-e to create shortcuts" so our program Cnows how to access its -ariables. Still in the
(ommunication setup" clicC the @dd button. This adds a shortcut !or our application which we can linC
to di!!erent de-ices. 8eneral practice is to gi-e it the same name as ou named our processor in
RSLogix 500. Eith the new shortcut selected" also select the MicroLogix in the Target tab. Git the
appl button to sa-e the linC. Bou ha-e to repeat this !or the Local tab as well# select our shortcut
name and our MicroLogix at the same time then hit @ppl then ,A.
5n the @pplication explorer" right clicC on :1isplas< and select :.ew<.
?or the MicroLogix application abo-e" '7#0J0" .%#0" .%#1" .%#$ are the addresses the PanelView
wishes to communicate with. (reate a Momentar Push 'utton" two .umeric 5nput +nables" one
.umeric 1ispla" and a Shutdown 'utton.
1ouble (licC the Momentar Push 'utton" select the (onnections Tab" and hit the ellipse 3>4 next to
:Value<. 5! :P@.+LTST< isnFt a-ailable" right clicC and select :re!resh< !rom the !olders list. Select
:P@.+LTST &= ,nline &= '7 &= '7#0< !rom the list. This isnFt the exact bit address" soit needs to be
edited. Git ,A" and then double clicC on the :TagJ+xpression< in!o !or :Value<. @dd :J0< to the end o! the
bit address" maCing it :K##LP@.+LTSTM'7#0J0N<. Bou can repeat this !or the :5ndicator< connection i! ou
want to implement this !eature.
Ising a similar process as described in the pre-ious dot point" @dd (onnections to .%#0 and .%#1 !or
the two .umeric 5nput +nables" and a connection to .%#$ !or the .umeric 1ispla. To displa the
.umeric -alue on the .umeric 5nputs" under the :label< tab" select :insert -ariable &= numeric &= ellipse
3>4 &= .%#0 &= ,A<.
Git the Pla button to test our screen. The shutdown button shouldnFt do anthing in test mode.
Sa-e the new displa as :Main<.
5n the application explorer" double clicC :Startup<. Select :initial graphic< and then :Main< !rom the
enabled dropdown list.
?rom the Menu 'ar select :@pplication &= (reate Runtime @pplication>< and sa-e it as whate-er ou
liCe.
Git the :Trans!er Itilit< 5con. Select the !ile ou want to download" and !rom the bottom window select
the PanelView !rom the +thernet 1ri-er. Git the 1ownload 'utton.
,n the PanelView" load the application and run it.

Problem#
The problem is when the .($1J.($$ is connected to an @5(P and a 'elden cable is also connected. The
handshaCing pins are re2uired in this setup and the handshaCing pins not crossed. The are re2uired to be
crossed !or handshaCing to occur with the 'elden cable.
5! 'elden is not used" the handshaCing pins are not re2uired.
