Routines Description
Face/Shoulder partners Face= across from you
Shoulder = beside you
Clock partners se a clock or other diagram! students sign each others at a specific time and that
is their partner "ie # o$clock partners%
Read &loud/'hink &loud Starts as a techni(ue and then mo)es to a student metacogniti)e and cogniti)e
learning strategy *here reader reads a section of te+t out loud and then thinks
aloud about the contents of that section, Partner can enhance the learning strategy
*ith use of strong (uestioning strategies,
Stay and Stray &fter *orking together in a group on a specific item! assignment! or topic! one or
more group members stay *ith the group product *hile one or more group
members rotate to other groups to learn and share,
-+pert .roups 'eacher determines se)eral topics that are fun! interesting! important! and/or
essential to the unit of study, Students then determine *hich topic they *ant to
kno* more about or decide *hether or not they are already e+perts in a specific
topic, .roups are structured to present their e+pertise to the class
/nner/Outer Circle 0ith &/1 partners! t*o circles are created2an & circle that faces out*ard and
the 1 circle that faces in*ard, 'he &/ 1 partner shares an idea and *hen the
teacher prompts! all 1$s mo)e one partner to their right and share again,
Lines of Communication Same idea as inner/outer circle! but structured as t*o lines, 0orks *ell in
smaller spaces,
'hink 3 Pair 3 Share Students first gi)en the chance to think silently about an idea before they turn!
pair *ith a partner and then share their thought or idea,
'hink 0rite Share Similar to 'hink! Pair! Share! but students *rite thoughts instead of speaking
them,
.i)e one! .et one & modified brainstorm that pro)ides for some structured sharing and interaction,
4ui5! 4ui5! 'rade Students *rite a (uestion and the ans*er on a sticky note, Students mingle
through room to find a partner, -ach person takes a turn asking his/her (uestion
and ans*ering their partners, 0hen complete! partners 'R&D- sticky notes and
mo)e to find a ne* partner,
6igsa* -ach member of a group is assigned some uni(ue material to learn and teach the
other group members, &ll students *orking on specific material *ork together,
0hip &round Students go around! *ith e)eryone in the group contributing an idea/ans*er,
7umbered 8eads & team is established and each member is gi)en a number, 'he numbered
student is called or asked to gi)e an idea/ans*er,
'alking Chips -ach member recei)es the same number of chips, -ach time a member *ishes to
speak! they put a chip in the center of the table, Once indi)iduals ha)e used up
their chips! they can no longer speak, Process continues until e)eryone in the
group has used up chips,
