EDUC 630 - Lesson Plan #2

Lesa McGarity
I. Topic and Grade Level: Algebra 1B Grade 10
Lesson Plan #2 Title: Solving Equations
II. Standard of Learning for South Carolina Elementary Algebra:
Math-EA-1.1 Communicate knowledge of algebraic relationships by using mathematical
terminology appropriately.
Math-EA-1.4 Judge the reasonableness of mathematical solutions.
Math-EA-1.5 Demonstrate an understanding of algebraic relationships by using a variety of
representations (including verbal, graphic, numerical, and symbolic).
Math-EA-1.6 Understand how algebraic relationships can be represented in concrete models,
pictorial models, and diagrams.
Math-EA-1.7 Understand how to represent algebraic relationships by using tools such as
handheld computing devices, spreadsheets, and computer algebra systems (CASs).
III. Objective: Students will be able to understand the process for solving algebraic equations
which include one-step, two-step, and multi-step equations using the do/undo method.
Students will be able to discern which task to accomplish first depending on the type of equation
and what it contains such as parenthesis, or variable on both sides. Students will be able to check
their solutions.
IV. List of materials: Promethean Board, classroom set of iPads, T-chart graphic organizer for
Solving Multi-Step equations, paper, pencils with erasers, Solving Equations Using the Do/Undo
handout, Comic Life Storyboard handout, Algebra textbook.
V. Description of class diversity and its connection to the instructional considerations.
The students for this particular class represent all three learning styles; audio, visual, and
kinesthetic. Each of these learning styles will be addressed during instruction. There are 19
students in the class with male/female ratio of 11:7. The majority of these students have failed
the class at least once. Six of the students have Individual Evaluation Plans and identified with
learning disabilities. They are mostly African American but five are Caucasian, three are
Hispanic and one is Indian. Fifteen of the students receive free/reduced lunch. Three of the
students require ESOL (English as a Second Language) services.
VI. Technology inclusion: Technology will be utilized throughout the lesson beginning with
Google search and problems on the Promethean Board. The students will each be given an iPad
with the Comic Life Application downloaded and access to the internet. Students will view the
Comic Life tutorial on the Promethean Board from the website
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b_83FgdOlM0 . Students will also have access to hand-held
calculators or they may use the Calculator X application that was introduced in previous lessons.

VII. Procedures Steps
Anticipatory Set:

1. Students will be shown examples of a Comic Life
presentation and what they will be trying to achieve by the end
of the lesson using Google search.
2. Students will view the Comic Life tutorial from YouTube.
3. Students will be broken into groups of three.
4. Four different equations will be placed on the Promethean
Board and students will discuss how to solve them.

Direct Instruction:

1. Each student will be given the Solving Equations Using the
Do/Undo Method handout containing the four examples on the
board.
2. Teacher will lead the class to discuss and review the
different types of equations and the steps necessary,
do/undo, to solve them.
3. Teacher will work through the first example on the handout
using the Promethean Board and answer any questions from
the students.
4. Students will be chosen to come to the board and complete
the other three examples.
5. Teacher will review how to check the solutions using the
examples on the handout.
Guided Practice: 1. Each group will be given the Solving Multi-Step Equations
handout.
2. Teacher will explain that each student will create a graphic
organizer, do/undo chart, for each equation and collaborate
with their group on the order of steps to solve the equations.
3. Groups will work together to complete their graphic
organizer.
Lesson Closure: Teacher will lead the class in checking their solutions and
review the graphic organizers from each group. The class will
discuss any differences in the steps that were chosen to solve
the equations.
Independent Practice: 1. Students will be give time to create their own equation and
story board for their project/presentation, identifying the steps
necessary to solve their equation.
2. The story board must have a minimum of 4 slides.
3. Once the story board has been approved the student will
create their Comic Life presentation using the iPads.
4. Students will save their project to their home folders which
the teacher can access to print out the projects.
VIII. Evaluation/Assessment:

Completed graphic organizer of the ten equations, teacher
observation, evaluation of students story board, Comic Life
project/presentation, and peer review of each students Comic
Life project.
IX. Risk Analysis: An area of risk for this lesson includes no network access which means
students would not be able to view the Comic Life tutorial. The video will be downloaded before
the class begins and placed on the teachers computer. This could also cause being unable to use
Google search. The html of the search will be saved on the teachers computer. If no network
access students will save their projects to thumb drives. In the case of hardware issues of the
iPads students will be able to access the Comic Life application from the classroom computers.
Students would take turns using the other available computers and, if necessary, use the teachers
desktop and laptop. Due to the varying levels of the students themselves more time may be

necessary to complete the project.
