The caterpi l lar is the larvae or a baby
of both the butterfly and a moth. It
comes wi th a segmented body, and has
a number of legs which they use to
wal k and cling on the surface.
Caterpi llars feed on leaves, pl ants and
fl owering plants.

The abdomen is the third section of
the caterpi llar s body. It holds the
prolegs, the anus and thi s i s mostly
where the spiracles are. The abdomen
is usuall y ten segments l ong.

The abdominal prolegs are l ocated i n
the abdomen and they are found in
pairs. These soft prolegs have hooks
on i ts ends and the caterpil lar uses
these to hold on to surfaces.

The anal prolegs are located at the
rear end of the caterpil lar and are
al ternately cal led claspers. These legs
are used to walk and to hold on to
foli age.
