Teacher: Ronald Ramirez porras

The most important goal of teaching a foreign language is that our

students achieve the communicative competence and the
development of the four main skills, and it is the purpose of this
didactic unit to develop these skills.

This didactic unit deals with the topics of sports, in this case
football/soccer. During the development of this unit, we can find
some videos and reading comprehension texts integrating the
history of the game and its most relevant players, as well as
some resources on internet that students should do to complete
their lessons.

Students will have to make dialogues using which player likes or

dislikes, according to what they know and writing them down.
I have included this unit because from my point of view, it is
updated according to the age and interests of the students and it
uses or integrates all the skills in a well-balanced way,
integrating resources of information technologies and
communications in learning.

TOPIC

Have you ever wonder how soccer / football games get into
our life?

When and where is the origin of this game from? Why is it so many people
in the world crazy about this game? Almost every culture has reference to
the history of soccer.

The origin of football / soccer can be found in every corner of geography

and history. The Chinese, Japanese, Italian, Ancient Greek, Persian,
Viking, and many more played a ball game long before our era. The
Chinese played "football" games date as far back as 3000 years ago. The
Ancient Greeks and the Roman used football games to sharpen warriors for
battle. In south and Central America a game called "Tlatchi" once
flourished.

But it was in England that soccer / football really begin to take shape. It
all started in 1863 in England, when two football association (association
football and rugby football) split off on their different course. Therefore, the
first Football Association was founded in England.

On October 1963, eleven London clubs and schools sent their

representatives to the Freemason's Tavern. These representatives were
intent on clarifying the muddle by establishing a set of fundamental rules,
acceptable to all parties, to govern the matches played amongst them. This
meeting marked the birth of The Football Association. The eternal dispute
concerning shin-kicking, tripping and carrying the ball was discussed
thoroughly at this and consecutive meetings until eventually on 8 December
the die-hard exponents of the Rugby style took their final leave. They were
in the minority anyway. They wanted no part in a game that forbade
tripping, shin-kicking and carrying the ball. A stage had been reached
where the ideals were no longer compatible. On 8 December 1863, football
and rugby finally split. Their separation became totally irreconcilable six
years hence when a provision was included in the football rules forbidding
any handling of the ball (not only carrying it).

Only eight years after its foundation, The Football Association already
had 50 member clubs. The first football competition in the world was started
in the same year - the FA Cup, which preceded the League Championship
by 17 years.

International matches were being staged in Great Britain before football

had hardly been heard of in Europe. The first was played in 1872 and was
contested by England and Scotland. This sudden boom of organized
football accompanied by staggering crowds of spectators brought with it
certain problems with which other countries were not confronted until much
later on. Professionalism was one of them. The first moves in this direction
came in 1879, when Darwin, a small Lancashire club, twice managed to
draw against the supposedly invincible Old Etonians in the FA Cup, before
the famous team of London amateurs finally scraped through to win at the
third attempt. Two Darwin players, the Scots John Love and Fergus Suter,
are reported as being the first players ever to receive remuneration for their
football talent. This practice grew rapidly and the Football Association found
itself obliged to legalise professionalism as early as 1885. This
development predated the formation of any national association outside of
Great Britain (namely, in the Netherlands and Denmark) by exactly four
years.
After the English Football Association, the next oldest are the Scottish FA
(1873), the FA of Wales (1875) and the Irish FA (1880). Strictly speaking, at
the time of the first international match, England had no other partner
association against which to play. When Scotland played England in
Glasgow on 30 November 1872, the Scottish FA did not even exist - it was
not founded for another three months. The team England played that day
was actually the oldest Scottish club team, Queen's Park.

The spread of football outside of England, mainly due to the British

influence abroad, started slow, but it soon gathered momentum and spread
rapidly to all parts of the world. The next countries to form football
associations after the Netherlands and Denmark in 1889 were New Zealand
(1891), Argentina (1893), Chile (1895), Switzerland, Belgium (1895), Italy
(1898), Germany, Uruguay (both in 1900), Hungary (1901) and Finland
(1907). When FIFA was founded in Paris in May 1904 it had seven founder
members: France, Belgium, Denmark, the Netherlands, Spain (represented
by the Madrid FC), Sweden and Switzerland. The German Football
Federation cabled its intention to join on the same day.

This international football community grew steadily, although it sometimes

met with obstacles and setbacks. In 1912, 21 national associations were
already affiliated to the Fédération Internationale de Football Association
(FIFA). By 1925, the number had increased to 36, in 1930 - the year of the
first World Cup - it was 41, in 1938, 51 and in 1950, after the interval
caused by the Second World War, the number had reached 73. At present,
after the 2000 Ordinary FIFA Congress, FIFA has 204 members in every
part of the world.

MATERIAL AND AIDS

 A TELEVISION SET.
 SPECIFIC UNIT VIDEOTAPE.
 COMPUTER WITH INTERNET´S CONNECTION
A little library with books of different levels.
 Blackboard.
 Student´s book.
 Photocopies.
 Notebook.
A tape-recorded with the lesson we are explaining.
 Dictionaries.

METHODOLOGY

The method will be adapted to the characteristics of the students

to favor the capacity to learn on their own and work as a team
promoting creativity and dynamism and I will integrate
resources of information technologies and communications in
learning.
Grammatical structures are learnt with oral procedures: drills and the
oral language come first, then the written language.
To engage the students, we are going to write the title of the unit on the
blackboard and we are going to ask them what they think the unit will
be about; all their suggestions will be taking into account, then to
introduce the vocabulary of sports, we will review with our students
which sports they know and what they practice.

We will begin the unit by talking about the topic (history of football and
its best football players) orally and if there is some kind of doubt with
the spelling, the students themselves will write it on the blackboard to
check it.
Then, to explain the grammar points, we will write on the board three
types of sentences. They already know the affirmative form of the past
simple, so they will connect the previous knowledge to the new
knowledge, the negative and interrogative form.
We will ask the students if they recognize something different in the
sentences, any new word, and the word order. Then, we will explain the
rule, and we will introduce more examples.

Then, students are going to do several activities related to grammatical

aspects such as completing the sentences, writing the sentences in the
negative and correcting the sentences. We will correct the activities
interacting with our students.
The next part of the unit will be doing more exercises in pairs; these
exercises will be related to asking and giving information and writing
questions with several words dealing with the subject.

Once they have talked about it, they will work in pairs the exercise of
matching the names to their corresponding pictures (football players).
They will correct them with their partners in pairs, using oral interaction
while the teacher monitors just to check they are speaking English or if
they have any kind of doubt.
In order to make the activity more dynamic, I will tell the students to
stand up, and walk around the class, when I`ll say ‘stop’, they will have
to ask their partner next to them about which player likes or dislikes.
One minute later, they will go on walking again round the class and
when I say ‘stop’, they will repeat the same action. We will play several
times. Then, the students will tell the teacher the likes and dislikes of
their partners using the structure: ‘Juan likes maradona but he doesn’t
like Pele.
In order to practice the writing skill we are going to show the students
the parts of an essay, the structure and a model for imitation. Then, the
students are going to write an essay in class related to the subject of
the unit. They will work individually with the help of the teacher and the
dictionary. Then, some of the students will read their compositions aloud
in order to show some examples.

In the next activity, the students are going to see some videos of
the text. Once that they have listened to the video, we will speak
about what they have understood from the text, and then, in
pairs they will answer the questions about it. They will compare
their answers with other groups.

Finally, we are going to do a self-assessment session, in which students

are going to do a series of activities individually to see their progress.
Those activities will be related to the acquisition and reinforcement of
vocabulary of the topic, the use of the past simple in the negative and
interrogative form.
Once that our students have done these activities, we will correct them
in pairs and the students will take notes of the correct sentences.

ASSESSMENT

I am going to evaluate what the students are doing during the whole
class; I will observe my student´s performance and achievement of the
general contents and objectives suggested in this didactic unit. If they
participate in class, or if they use English as the main vehicle of
communication in the activities carried out in pairs.
We are going to devote 20 % of the total marks to this kind of
evaluation, then, another 10 % of the marks will be devoted to the
presentations of the students in the English language. 10 % of the mark
will be devoted to the self-assessment activities that students have done
in class. Finally, 60 % of the final mark will be taken into account with
the final exam of this unit.
