Introduction
The Governors (Emoluments, Allowances and Privileges) Amendment Bill, 2012 was passed by
Parliament during the winter session [ last session of 15th lok sabha] recently.
The Bill seeks to amend the Governors (Emoluments, Allowances and Privileges) Act, 1982.
Provisions of Governors (Emoluments, Allowances and Privileges) Act, 1982.
It extends to the whole of India except the State of Jammu & Kashmir
A Governor shall be entitled, without payment of rent, to the use of his of f icial residences
throughout his term of of f ice and no charge f all on the Governor personally in respect of f urnishing
or the maintenance of such residences.
Under the Act, each Governor is entitled to an emolument of Rs 1,10,000 per month.
Ex-Governors are entitled only to medical benef its.

The Bill seeks to provide certain other pension and post-retirement benef its to ex-Governors.
The Bill amends the Act to provide that the ex-Governor shall be entitled to one personal assistant
for the rest of his life.
When Ex- Governor shall not get emoluments
The 2012 Bill provides that this emolument shall not be provided f or the period the ex-Governor
has: (a) been re-appointed as Governor; or (b) elected to either the Parliament or state
legislature; or (c) been appointed to any office of profit under the state government or
central governmenta
