Reading Response Process
The goal of English 250 was to give each of us the opportunity to develop our own skills
in reading, writing and analyzing information. The weekly reading analysis logs gave us the
chance to practice with rhetorical analysis and better understand the various organizational
strategies authors use to achieve their overall purpose. To fully engage in the readings and grasp
the content, I often read each excerpt or essay multiple times. The first read through would often
be a more casual style of reading which would allow general knowledge of the authors topic. A
second read through would then look more closely at the specific organizational strategy(s) used
and begin to pinpoint the authors use of ethos, pathos, logos, and other additional rhetoric
devices. A third and final read through acted as a skim style method that sculpted out the
remaining details to thoroughly reflect on the reading. Near the start of the semester, I attempted
to incorporate two or three bullet points from the log ideas for each log. It turns out however,
that idea didnt work out so well. By trying to discuss the ethos, pathos, logos as well as
applying the text to a recent news event or relevant social happening, it caused the focus of the
log to emphasize content based reflections. I then decided that I would begin each log entry with
a brief introduction of the author to establish credibility and then explain the ethos, logos, and
pathos used within the context. Certain logs allowed for symbolism and additional strategies to
be mentioned. As the semester progressed, our in class lectures assisted our understanding of

analysis and that reflected in the improvement of my reading logs reflections. They served as a
wonderful basis for many of the assignments done throughout the course.
