Grade Latin Class Expectations

COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This year you will be introduced to the grammar, syntax, and vocabulary of the Latin
language. We will focus on reading and translating Latin to English as well as Latin
composition, and we will investigate Roman culture, etymology, and mythology. Students may
participate in individual and/or group projects discussing mythology and culture.
Aside from the behavioral expectations listed on the Crossroads website, the Middle
School Latin department has the following guidelines:

Materials: Always bring to class 6 things: your physical textbook, paper, pen/pencil, binder,
planner, and homework. Your laptop will be used in certain occasions. Keep all your
translations, quizzes, tests, exercises, et cetera in your binder. Dividers should be labeled:
Translations & Exercises, Grammar Notes, Mythology, Tests & Quizzes, and Miscellaneous.
You are responsible for keeping your notebook organized. There will be random material checks
throughout the school year.

Homework: Expect approximately 30 minutes of homework per night including translation
from Latin to English and occasionally from English to Latin, memorization of vocabulary,
forms, and terms, preparation for quizzes/tests, reading, worksheets and exercises, and short- and
long-term projects. Homework is due during the class period. If it is done on a computer, a print
out must be present at the beginning of class. Homework not present will be considered late. No
exception will be made. Homework should be double-spaced and include: your name, date, class
period, page number of text, title of assignment and vocabulary list of the words you looked up
(if applicable). Homework not done correctly must be redone. Assignments, which are missing,
can be made up, but the work will be marked as late and you will lose points.
In order to gain the most from this course, your preparation time at home should include
studying your class notes, vocabulary, and lessons new and old EVEN IF NOT ASSIGNED. If
you have questions about homework or classwork, you should note the questions on your
assignment and ask the questions as soon as possible. Many times your homework will be to
study, and you should be able demonstrate knowledge in class in the way of homework checks.
Students who take longer than 30 focused minutes to complete the homework should talk to me
to discuss strategies to improve speed without sacrificing the quality of work.

Quizzes and Tests: Anticipate a quiz or test to be scheduled regularly throughout the term.
They may focus on translation, grammar, vocabulary (Latin and/or English), culture, and
mythology. You will be given advance notice of these exams, so use that extra time wisely. If
you miss a quiz or test, you must schedule a time to take the item, and extra credit will no longer
be available. Credit on a quiz or test is a score of 75%-89%; Honors is 90%-100%. If you earn
No Credit on a test, you must retake part of or the entire exam. You must see me and do test
corrections before you are eligible to retake a test. After the retake, your two scores will be
averaged to get your final test grade. You may not retake quizzes, but you may add denarii.

Denarii: Denarii are extra credit points, which will be rewarded throughout the school year.
They equal one point NOT one percent and can only be used on quizzes or homework
assignments. Denarii cannot be used on tests, challenges or transferred to other students. To add
denarii you must do quiz corrections on a separate sheet of paper. Denarii can also be lost due to
inappropriate behavior. For instance, you will lose denarii for being unprepared for class or
asking a question whose answer can be found on this sheet.

Laptop Use: Using a laptop is a privilege and not a right. You do not need this tool to be
successful in the class. If you are caught doing anything dishonest or inappropriate, or if the
device is distracting to you or others, you will lose the ability to use it temporarily or
permanently.

Academic Integrity: I do not raise the question of dishonesty unless a student crosses that line;
at which time, it becomes difficult to evaluate whether any of the students previous work was
done honestly. Please do not discredit your record by attempting any form of cheating: Whats
the answer to #5? What was on the test? Was the test easy? Sharing work or answers of any kind
or getting translations from other sources is also cheating. Using Google Translate or any other
online translation website is also considered cheating. Anyone found cheating in any way will
earn 1 as the homework, quiz, or test grade. So, if an item is worth 50 points, the recorded grade
would be 1. Furthermore, your parents and dean will be notified, and you will be subject to
whatever consequences follow. Please avoid any reason for this discussion.

Caveat discipula/discipulus: If you experience difficulty with any aspect of the course, arrange
to meet with me immediately. I am also available during lunch/snack or by appointment. Do not
wait until the day of the quiz or test to tell me that you do not understand or are unprepared. If
you anticipate difficulties finding time to study for a quiz because of a commitment, you must
talk to me in advance not the day of the exam. You are in charge of your education, so please
take charge.
