regarding Australian culture and the presence of
Indigenous cultures both Aboriginal and Torres Strait
Islander peoples today. Ask students to reflect on their
learning from the previous lessons asking
What are some aspects that make up the Australian
culture today?
Write responses on whiteboard using concept map.
Responses should include health system (hospitals,

1 minute
Introduce todays lesson
Explain to students the lesson outline.
Students will have to put their researcher hats on
as they will be travelling back in time to explore
what life was like for the first Australians.

Students will use a range of sources including a
thinglink, the artefact display from the Qld
Museum and the school library to research and
collect information about the first Australians
including their connection to country, barter
systems, use and respect for the environment,
foods, medicines, clothing, shelter, tools, and
roles performed by men, women and children.

Students will then use their findings to make
comparisons between the Indigenous cultures
both past and present and represent this using the
workbooks provided to be glued into History
books. Hand out workbooks.

After this the class will come back as a whole
group to discuss their findings and revisit the
question we have asked that are on the
whiteboard to see if we can answer them.

INFORM STUDENTS THEY WILLHAVE
APPROXIMATLEY 40minutes to research. Teacher will
ring bell when there is 5 minutes remaining any students
in the library will be notified by their classmates when
bell rings to come back to the classroom and finish off
their findings.

MOTIVATION

Explain the quickest way of travelling back in time is by
hopping into our time travel machine. Instruct everyone
to fasten their seat belts. Turn off lights and set timer to
go back 40 000 years and start Youtube simulation.

Stop at 1.29min and open thing link. Explain to students
that they have arrived in Australia 40 000 year ago and
that as a class you will watch the clip The First
Australians as an introduction of what Australia was like
then. Ask students to pay special attention to what
Professor Janet McCalman has to say.
Start clip and stop at 3.19min
Ask students What do they mean by Australia was Terra
Nullius? Explain Terra Nullius means a land belonging
to no one or no mans land and that is what people
believed many years ago however ask student s how
many lives did Professor Janet McCalman say were
actually living in Australia then? Looking for 1.6
Billion in response.

Direct students to get started on their research and
explain they can choose what resources they would
like to use to investigate. (28 students in pairs = 14
groups)
Explain that there is only 6 laptops/ 4 Ipads for
groups to access the thinglink which means that there
can only be 10 groups investigating the thinglink at a
time. The other 4 groups will have to source the
library or explore the displays set up at the back of
the room. Remind students of the appropriate
behaviour whilst in the library and inform them that
the librarian has set aside a collection of literature for
them to look at.

Assist students in negotiating resources and transition
only a couple of pairs at a time.
