Each tapestry will require at least 4 different colors(complementary) and 3 different patterns, students will circle on a handout which patterns they want to use. Students will complete their tapestry weaves with a hemstitch, and then the finished piece can be removed from the loom.

KEY CRITERIA: Textiles, Weaving, Weft, Warp, Loom, Fibers, Navajo, Bayeux Tapestry, Complementary colors, Contrast

SEQUENCE OF TEACHING & LEARNING 1) The teacher will talk about fibers and textiles and assess students prior knowledge of weaving. What are fibers? What do you know that is woven? The teacher will brainstorm a list with the class. Ex.) baskets, clothing, blankets, tablecloths, scarfs, Rainbow Looms, etc., 2) Go over history of tapestry weaving during the Middle Ages, also including the famous Bayeux Tapestry, Caucasian Soumak designs, and the Navajo culture that uses weaving in their popular rug designs. 3) Teacher will discuss the process of weaving, the different parts of the loom (warp/weft), and show a video on hand weaving that further demonstrates the process. 4) Have students write down 5 facts from the video for good focus. 5) Teacher will show the class teacher examples of a loom, a blanket that is woven on a loom, and a tapestry example showing different patterns the students can see what they would look like for their final. 6) Teacher will talk about the different colors and how the color choice can impact the final design. Teacher will discuss complementary colors and contrast. 7) The teacher will begin showing the various pattern techniques, students practice at their seats with colored paper strips and yarn scraps. 8) Students circle the patterns they want to use for their final and choose colors that are complimentary, and begin weaving on their cardboard looms. It will be important to keep the weaves tight and together, no loose holes in the warp. 9) Once students have finished weaving their patterns, they will hemstitch both ends of their tapestry to prevent the weave from separating. The piece can be removed from the loom. 10) Students will write an artist statement about the communication of their tapestry and the colors or pattern design.
