Name: Date: Hour: Shakespearean Snapshots After the in-class reading of Shakespeares Romeo and Juliet Act 3.1, you should have an idea of the chaos occurring at the plays climax. You have been assigned to groups and specific chunks of the scene for you to act out with group members. Below is a diagram to help refresh the scene.

Tableaux Vivants (Living Pictures)- Used in the world of art and theatre to recreate famous works of art using backdrops, props, costumes and live models. Like frozen statues actors arrange themselves in an appropriate opening tableau, then one at a time each actor comes to life, speaks and line, and changes position, (SSF,163). 3.1 Day 1: Each group member should fill out this sheet. Be sure all group members are written down on the sheet before you leave class today. Assign each group member a role and circle the section of the play you will be performing tomorrow and going over tonight. Going over this section of the text and pick out two lines you perceive to be your characters most important as well as provide a brief explanation as to why. Write these on the lines below. If you are writing opening/closing statements, come up with section summaries. If you directing, come up with stage directions for two characters. Be sure to cite the lines and model examples below. CHARACTER EXAMPLE: 1. These violent delights have violent ends -Friar Lawrence 2.6.8 explanation: Important because Friar Lawrence is warning us of events to come. DIRECTOR EXAMPLE: 1. When Friar Lawrence says the line 2.6.8, I want him to pace stage and walk around pensively. I want him to be pacing the stage because it signifies his worry.

OPENING EXAMPLE: 1. In Act 2.6.1-15 Friar Lawrence is warning us of events to come and Romeo demonstrates he is struck by love and is willing to suffer any consequences. This is important foreshadowing in the play CLOSING EXAMPLE: 1. Day 2: Alright! Time to collaborate. Task 1: Look at your peers selected lines and work as a group to determine when the lines should be said. Use the text as your guide.

Task 2 If you havent given anyone opening/closing statements, work as a group to craft them. These are simple explanations of what is occurring and its significance. Think of what your characters will be doing. Youre all on stage. Everyone must have some sort of action or reaction for each line. You will be graded on these! Task 3 Go over scene and try to act it out. You will have 6 minutes to perform. Ideally, opening and closing statements should be about 30 seconds to a minute (these are included in the six minutes.
