Grade 5 Science: 5H Teacher Candidate: Jordan Davison Subject: Science and Technology Date: October 16, 2013 Duration:

50 minutes Curriculum expectations: 1. Analyse the impact of human activities and technological innovations on human health. 2. Demonstrate an understanding of the structure and function of human body systems and interactions within and between systems. 3. Investigate the structure and function of the major organs of various human body systems. Specific Expectations: 1. use scientific inquiry/experimentation skills Learning/Teaching resources: The Ontario Curriculum for Science and Technology, Grades 1-8, 2007, Revised Edition. Laptop cart for the students. Grade/Class: 5 Hickman Strand: Understanding Life Systems Time: 9:15am-10:05am Lesson Topic: Research Skills

Introductory Activity: (8-12min) Lay out the instructions in a chunk for the students. o 1. We are going to go through the handout so that you know the general guidelines for the project and what the teachers want to see. o 2. Then I will provide you with a lesson on research and how to develop your research skills. o 3. Then we will get the laptops and you may start doing some research for your project. Go through the Inquiry project handout with the students. o Go through the guidelines and explain that we want them to touch upon these topics. o What we want to see The main purpose of the assignment is for you to learn how to research and to hone your research skills. So that is a big thing that Mr. Hickman is looking for (if you can research a fairly complex topic and find the useful information). o What we do not want to see Copying or plagiarism Try to put things in your own words and always cite your sources

Development strategies: (30 min) Teach the students basic research skills. o Show them how to refine their searches

Search Heart Disease. Comes up with 212 million results. Go through some of things that come up. Ask the class do you think this is a good search? o Why do you think it is? o Provide an answer It is good if you just want to find out some basic information on your topic. For those of you that do not have any idea about your disease or illness you may want to do an initial broad search like this and do a bit of reading about it. However for our project, I think there are some better searches we can do. Ask the class Who can think of a way we can change our search so that it relates more closely to the project guidelines. Then search How heart disease affects the circulatory system. Comes up with 350,000 results. Explain to them that when they have a specific question or answer they are looking for then it is better to have a specific, more refined search input. They are looking for some specific things related to their disease (treatments, prevention, affect on different body systems, etc). o Always read the title of the search results before clicking it and look at the little blurb underneath. This will give you really good indication on whether the website will be useful or not useful for you. Show them how the bolded words are what they searched. o Teach them to always save good website urls in a word document. That way they can go back and find them more easily. Concluding activity: (5-7min) Have the students save their work on their jumpdrives, shut down, and return the laptops to the laptop cart.

Follow-up: Discuss ways in which the students can categorize and organize their research. Have the students choose a medium with which they will present their project.
