The call to Performance covers the practical, political, and mental sides of performance. It covers in detail the difference between performing which is the actions of a performance and performativity which is the meaning behind the actions, relating back to these two concepts throughout. This article makes the point and argument that the art of performance challenges the scholarly article as the most preferred way to present information. It argues that a performance shows and conveys the subject of choice in a way that is easier for the audience to understand. Denzin argues that we should treat performances as a complementary form of research publication, an alternative method or way of interpreting and presenting the results of ones ethnographic work (193). This to me means that instead of doing the research on a topic and then just writing a paper about it, the information is presented through a performance. This would allow the information to be given in a more productive way and in a way that is easier for the audience to understand. The focus of my subject area relates to this article because of the fact that acting is all about trying to draw the audience on stage and make them feel what the actors are feeling in each scene. I make the argument that acting is all about performing for other people. It is about making it an experience for the audience.

Matthew Riddle discusses in this article the importance of role-play as a teaching tool in helping to develop a students performance identity. This article fallows a case study done at the University of Melbourne called the The Campaign. The campaign takes a group of students through a 4 week time period at the end of a mock political campaign throughout an 8 week program. The program is designed to teach students how to develop an identity through performance. This article discusses how the case study helped to teach students about performance identity and develop a students personal performance identity. Overall I felt this article made some very key arguments about constructing a performance identity. Riddle states that clothing, physical characteristics, speech patterns, and gestures are all important parts of the performance (65). Now I agree with Riddle that all of the aspects mentioned are important to a performance but I would even take it a step further to say that these aspects all contribute to the construction of ones character in a performance. These aspects are what make up the backstory of a character, and the backstory is what helps the character to come alive and connect with the audience. This article relates to my topic in the way that it talks about ways to construct a performance identity and that we act differently based on the situation we are in. I feel like my topic lends itself well to this article in the fact that since my topic

focuses on the identity construction in theatre which will affect an identity because of the surroundings which would be different than that of a movie set or political campaign.
