Reading Comprehension. Module 8 We all love the little local shop until we have to do our own shopping.

. Then we go to the superstore. It seems that we are happy to sacrifice everything else just for a little convenience. Hundreds of thousands of people shop in superstores every week because they can do one-stop shopping - they can buy almost everything they need from one place, and so save a little time. It s true, they can also select from a huge variety of anything they want to buy, and they know that the quality will always be good. Then, when they have paid at the checkout, they do not need to carry their heavy plastic bags: they can put them in a trolley and push them the short distance to their car. But not everything is wonderful in the world of the superstore! As I said at the beginning, people have stopped shopping in the little local shop, and it is now disappearing . One reason why people remember it with so much affection is that it was just that: local. You could walk the short distance to it, buy a few things, meet your friends there and have a chat. By contrast, superstores are usually outside the town centre, and sometimes completely outside the town. You usually need a car to get there and, because you have made the great journey, you do a whole week s shopping in one visit. They are usually so crowded people do not want to stop and chat. And what you buy is not cheap!
