This document describes a step by step process for creating a map of topographic index from DEM Digita! E!e"ation Mode!#$ %s an examp!e& DEM of HBE' Hubbard Broo( Experimenta! 'orest# )as used *0 by *0 meters#$ +t is assumed that the user has %rc,+- 9$1 as )e!! as %rc+nfo .or(station$ Step 1. /reate tempora! )or(ing directory& in this examp!e& /01Temp%rc,+-1HBE'*0M$ 2ote that you shou!d not inc!ude space in the directory name$# Step 2. Do)n!oad the HBE' DEM data from http033)))$hubbardbroo($org3research3gis3gis$htm$ /!ic( on 4Hubbard Broo( *0m DEM5 hb*0mdem$exe# and sa"e the fi!e to )or(ing directory$ Doub!e6 c!ic( the hb*0mdem$exe fi!e and you )i!! ha"e t)o fi!es extracted hb*0mdem$e00 and hb*0mdem7fgdc$htm#$ Step 3. /on"ert the DEM in an interchange fi!e format hb*0mdem$e00# to raster$ 8pen %rcMap& then c!ic( on %rcToo!box icon # to open %rcToo!box$ /!ic( on /o"erage Too!s 9 /on"ersion 9 To /o"erage 9 +mport 'rom +nterchange 'i!e$ -pecify the fi!e !ocation for 4+nput +nterchange 'i!e5 and c!ic( 48:5$ The HBE' DEM hb*0mdem# can no) be added # to %rcMap0

Do)n!oad the %M; %rc Macro ;anguage# script for ca!cu!ating topographic index from E-<+ %rc-cripts database http033arcscripts$esri$com3#$ -earch for 4Topographic +ndex5 and c!ic( on 4/ompound Topographic +ndex5& )hich is )ritten )ith %M; !anguage$ %M; script can be run using %rc+nfo .or(station$ 2ote that another a"ai!ab!e script& 4/a!cu!ate compound topographic )etness# index5& is )ritten )ith %"enue $a"e# !anguage& )hich can on!y be run using %rc=ie) *$x and not %rc,+- >$x or 9$x$ The fi!e that you do)n!oad to your )or(ing directory )i!! ha"e the name of 4%-11>6*$am!5$ <ename it to 4/T+$am!5$ Step 5. <un the script using %rc+nfo .or(station$ 'rom the tas(bar& c!ic( on 4-tart 9 %!! ?rograms 9 %rc,+- 9 %rc+nfo .or(station 9 %rc5 to open the %rc program$ %t the arc prompt& change the current directory to your )or(ing directory by typing 4) /01Temp%rc,+-1HBE'*0M5$ <un the script by typing 4@r /T+$am! hb*0mdem ti*0m5 creating the map of topographic index ti*0m#0
