Practicum Reflection-Guided Reading Lesson Name of Book: Comprehension Skills pack Level: DRA 2.5 1. What was the area of focus today during the lesson? What activities related to the area of focus did the teacher include in the lesson today? The area of focus today was authors purpose. In both of the stories we read today, the authors purpose is to entertain. We also went over informing and persuading during group discussion. We read two different stories; The Dress and the Dream and The Spider and the Watermelon. I had the students underline details from the story that helped them come to the conclusion that the purpose was to entertain. There were also informative sentences in both stories and we highlighted those and discussed their importance to the story. 2. What went well with the instruction? What did students learn?

The students really enjoyed the two stories today. They were all engaged and ready to do the next step. We were pushed for time today, as Mrs. Parker informed me we would be. This is why I did not include the write and share at the end of the lesson. Map testing is in two weeks. They were practice testing today and I could only pull my group for 20 minutes, if that. The students did learn that even though the purpose was to entertain, there was also details in the text that informed us. 3. Explain a growth moment for yourself where you realized, learned, or confirmed something from today dealing with student achievement in the area of reading. (phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, comprehension, before/during/after reading.) A growth moment for myself was how being able to decode what they authors purpose is really does help improve your comprehension of what is going on in the story because it forces you to pay attention to the details. The students were all able to remember many details of the story because while reading the story they were looking for clues to help them decide what the authors purpose is. Seeing a tool that we have been taught actually helping students is a powerful thing. It makes you feel accomplished in helping your students read! 4. Describe a moment when a student grasped an idea/concept-that got it! kind of moment. How was the teacher able to facilitate this experience? Explain the situation.

One of the students, in particular, is Hispanic. So when we were reading the story The Dress and The Dream she was able to relate. She elaborated even in more details about real Mexican traditions. I allowed her to talk about her family and their traditions. All of the students were engaged and eager to hear her stories. Her stories helped me explain that even though the authors purpose of the story is to entertain, he also included parts of the text that informed us of real life things. I felt like having her explain more about Mexican traditions, students were able to understand why they author put a couple informative sentences in the story that helped draw us in even more and helped us become entertained.
