St. Andrews Modern Residential Complex

The site
- Located in Huddersfield - Next to the Huddersfield Broad Canal - Approx 100 back to back terrace houses were on the site before - The site is now used as a car park

Site Analysis
- Canal side location - Easy access to local facilities - Easy road access - Pedestrian and bicycle access - Site next to the main road - Close to town centre - Large enough site to create a residential complex - Attractive canal views - The bridge next to the site allows close link to town centre - Some pollution from the traffic - Noise from the traffic and industry environment

St.Andrews Road Project - Residential Complex

The Residential Complex is composed of small to medium buildings that make up the larger complex. The buildings are located around the site to create a wall of protection. This is creating an internal courtyard which operates as a communal space for the residents of the complex. Between each building there are pathways that provide a connection between each of the components of the complex, as well as to the external roads. The distribution of apartments among the many buildings allows a wide range of views enhancing the importance of the human scale among the structures. The morphology of the building consists of apartments varying between two or three bedrooms, a living room and dining space, a kitchen and a bathroom. The organisation of the apartments allows for direct access to the central staircase and the lift. The complex also utilises ecological principles.

Sustainable St-Agatha-Berchem Housing Complex in Belgium
Housing complex exceeding energy code in Belgium The low-energy housing units have an E level (Belgium energy performance level) of 60 for the apartments and 50 or less for the houses

The white cubic volumes are accented with warm wood and rich green garden areas It features use of reinforced concrete, flat roofs, private gardens and orientation toward the sun Balance between economic, technical and social criteria while offering exceptional architectural quality and excellent energy performance. Beyond energy performance, the project features solar panels, rainwater recovery, environmentally friendly materials, and optimized insulation and ventilation

A Modern LA Apartment Complex
Residential complex focused on community, light and open space Equipping the complex with sustainable features, energyefficient and bright

Access to each apartment is gained through the central courtyard, which eliminates the need for climate-controlled corridors
All the units have windows on both sides, allowing for ample daylight as well as cross ventilation The lime green walls were a nod to nature, while the white is used to help bounce light down to the lower units. Local managed forests produced the redwood siding, and a rainscreen helps minimize the need for repair on the complex. The rainscreen will also help cool the building by allowing air movement between the cladding and the building.

Sustainability in use
Ground source heat pump Electric Underfloor heating system Water tanks
Provide heating and hot water Needs little maintenance Can lower energy bills Can lower homes carbon emissions

Can save money on heating bills Efficient Give better warmth Space saver

Help promote water conservation Save money on water bills Rainwater collected can be used for gardening and other jobs

Cross Ventilation
Thermal stores

Natural ventilation system No extra energy use cost Thermal stores will help to avoid the short cycling of a heat pump Managing the difference in time between when heat is available and when it is needed Reducing the need to buy expensive fossil fuels to meet ondemand hot water or space heating

Structure: Buchan Insulated Sandwich Panel

Task Green Flood Barrier

- Flood protection from the canal

Precast concrete floor

-Highly energy efficient - Durable - Efficient - Made off site - U value 0.12 W/m2K

Protec warm roof system

Buchan panels provide a strong, durable, energy-efficient, fireresistant composite cladding system. All aspects of the production process are undertaken in an off-site factory environment, thereby enabling achievement of the highest possible quality finish. Construction is much faster with the ability to adopt just in time site delivery and a fully integrated structure and skin system where load-bearing wall panels provide both structural support and external finish, minimising on-site labour cost. Prefabricated sandwich panels also eliminate the need for external scaffolding saving the Main Contractor costs and prelims.

Triple glazed windows

U value 0.75 W/m2K

- Supporting structure: concrete inner leaf - Thermal insulation: stone wool + stainless steel trusses cc 600 mm - Concrete outer leaf - Surface finishing : exterior abstract warm timber green, white, grey and cream texture coating U value 0.16 W/m2K

Buchan Sandwich Partition Panel 200mm

-Non-combustibility and a fire resistance rating up to four hours guarantee a high level of fire safety - High panel strength and stiffness mean long spans and minimal deflection in construction - Good thermal insulation without thermal bridges and reliable tightness ensure high energy efficiency.

Smart Home Technologies in use

Panasonic Home energy conservation

Some home appliances will be equipped with ECONAVI function. This function automatically detects losses and then adjusts to conserve electricity and water by itself. For instance, ECONAVI refrigerators learn when they aren't being used by the family and then eliminate unnecessary cooling during this time. The televisions control screen brightness based on where people are located and the brightness of the room. And the washing machines detect how soiled or dry clothing is and adjust electricity and water use accordingly. Designed to maintain and improve the qualities of life while also eliminating wasteful CO2 emissions.

The OpenEnergyMonitor System

This smart system is an open source monitoring system with the capability to monitor electricity, temperature, humidity and interface with pulse output meters such as water meter's and smart electricity meters.
