Web Integration Unit Plan

Title: Career Cruising Subject/Course: Computer Applications Grades: 9 Designer: Amy Perry

Topic: Career/Edu. Planning

Stage 1Desired Results Introduction: This unit was designed for our ninth grade Computer Applications courses. Students will use the Internet to learn more about careers and colleges/universities that specialize in their career interest. The unit also focuses on teaching students the importance of setting goals, constructing education plans, and building portfolios and resumes. (also see Statement on what Internet Bring to the Unit document on CD) Established Goals: NETS Technology Foundation Standards for all Students I. Technology productivity tools Students use technology tools to enhance learning, increase productivity, and promote creativity. III. Technology research tools Students use technology to locate, evaluate, and collect information from a variety of sources. Students use technology tools to process data and report results. Students evaluate and select new information resources and technological innovations based on the appropriateness for specific tasks. Understandings: What understandings are desired? Students will use the Internet to access Career Cruising. Using Career Cruising will: allow students to use the Internet for research purposes increase student interest in numerous colleges and universities increase student awareness on possible career options allow students to become more aware of the various technologies that are available to them through the Savannah Chatham County Pubic School System Students will know.. Essential Questions: What essential questions will be considered? How have you started to plan for your future career? Do you think career planning could affect your education plan? What is Career Cruising and how can it be used? Why is using Career Cruising essential to your freshman year?

Students will be able to Access Career Cruising through the Internet Understand all four major features found in Career Cruising: Career Matchmaker, Explore Careers, Explore College and Universities, and Career Portfolio Tool Complete the initial interest assessment tool Search for various careers. Explore, locate, and compare five college/universities of their choice (colleges that match their career interests) Explore, locate, and compare five schools that offer majors related to their career interests Begin constructing a resume and portfolio

Stage 2Assessment Evidence Performance Tasks: (Summary in GRASPS form) Goal: To teach students how to use Career Cruising through the major features found in the online resource. Role: Students are asked to become knowledgeable about Career Cruising with the ultimate goal of creating an education plan, resume, and portfolio. Audience: Ninth grade Computer Application students Situation: Students will spend a one and one-half hour block exploring the basics of Career Cruising. The first lesson will be followed by other assignments using this online resource. Performance Tasks: (see learning activities section, and handouts on CD) How will the students be assessed? Observation, discussion, a question/answer session, and hands-on computer activities will be incorporated into the lesson. Students will also receive handouts that will be completed for a check grade. These handouts will also become part of the students class notebook. Once we have spent time in Career Cruising, the teacher will log in to Career Cruising as an administrator to evaluate the students progress. The completion of the student portfolio will count as a test grade and the resume will count as two class grades. (please note, these assignments will not be graded until later)

Key Criteria Understands basic concepts introduced through Career Cruising. Is able to complete introductory inventory in the Career Matchmaker section of site. Begins to create student portfolio and resume using the handouts provided. Stage 3Learning Plan Learning Activities The students will: Be introduced to Career Cruising by viewing a brief PowerPoint presentation. The PowerPoint presentation will overview the following: o What is Career Cruising? o Assessing Career Cruising o Logging Into Career Cruising o Student Usernames and Passwords o Overview Introducing the Four Major Features (students will be given Summary of Features handout at this time, from CD) o The Homepage o Things to Remember about Career Cruising Students will be given the school username and password Students will be given their own personal username and password Students will log-in to the schools part of Career Cruising and explore the home page which includes The Weeks Features, Career Focus, Career Quiz, and Upcoming Events. Students will log-in to their own personal login and explore their home page which includes the four major features, Career Portfolio and Resume Builder components, as well as a place to upload files and save links. Students will be directed to the Career Matchmaker tab located at the top of the screen. Career Matchmaker is an internationally respected interest assessment tool. o Students will complete the initial assessment to acquire a list of forty careers that match their career interest. Career are ranked in order of suitability. o Students will click on an occupation to receive feedback on why the occupation is a good match for him/her. o Next, students will evaluate how careers match up with his/her answers. o Students will also have a chance to look at the related careers in terms of choosing a level of education and assessing their skills Students will be directed to the Explore Careers section of the web site. The Explore Careers section gives you several different ways to search for careers. o Students will search careers from Keyword search, Search by school subject, Career cluster search, and Career selector. o Once students locate an occupation that is of interest to them, they will be able to view the following information. Job Description Working Conditions Earnings Education & Training Direct links to related college and university programs Sample Career Plan A list of related occupations Links to other sources of information Photofile Multimedia interviews (2 per occupation) o At this time, students will complete the table titled Comparing Careers to Student

Interest. This handout requires students to locate five careers and compare each. Students will turn assignment in for a check grade.

Next students will be introduced to the Explore Education and Training section of the Career Cruising site. This section of Career Cruising provides comprehensive college, university, and vocational school information to help students plan for their future education and training. o Students will search for schools by name and state o Once students locate a college or university that they are interested in, students will view detailed information on the particular school he/she selected, which includes: School Profile Admissions Academic Information Enrollment Facilities and Services Student Life Majors Offered o Students will save at least five schools to their personal profile (this will be seen later when portfolio is viewed) o Students will learn how to access financial aid programs o Next students will complete the table titled Comparing Schools to Student Interest. This handout requires students to locate five colleges/universities and compare each. Students will be required to locate and use at least one vocational school. Next students will be introduced to the Career Portfolio Tool. This is one of the most useful elements of Career Cruising. The Career Portfolio Tool allows students to keep track of all of their career exploration activities. o Students will be given a handout (Career Cruising-Resume Building Guide on CD) to be used over the next few weeks to collect information for the portfolio section of Career Cruising. o Students will review the schools that they previously saved to their profile. o Students will learn how to upload a file/document into their portfolio. o Students will begin to create a personalized high school education plan. o Students will begin to record their career and life goals. o Students will begin to record their volunteer experience, skills, abilities, extracurricular activities, and hobbies. o Students will be shown how to build their customized resume.

Since Im registered as a Career Cruising Administrator, students can be easily evaluated on their process in Career Cruising. The following things will be checked after the activities listed above are finished. Teacher will post essential questions and create visual displays throughout the classroom. The teacher will prepare all handouts and lead discussions relating to career and education planning. The teacher will also contact parents through emails informing them of how students can access and continue to work on Career Cruising from home or any location with Internet

access. Teacher will make accommodations for students with special needs. The following handouts will used during the training.
