SUNY Cortland Club Sports

A Sport Club offers members of the SUNY Cortland community (students, and in some cases faculty and staff) to further their common interest, knowledge and skill in an activity through participation and/or competition. These interests can be competitive, recreational, or instructional in nature. Clubs may represent the university in intercollegiate competition or conduct activities such as practice, instruction, and social and tournament play. The clubs are meant to be a learning experience for the members through their involvement in fund-raising, public relations, organization, administration, budgeting, and scheduling, as well as developing skills in their sport.

Staff
Julian Wright is beginning his twenty-second year as the Director of Recreational Sports at SUNY Cortland. Prior to that, Julian was Assistant Director of Recreational Sports at Mississippi State University in Starkville for twelve years. He earned an Associate in Arts Degree in Liberal Arts from Northeast Mississippi Community College in 1969 and BS and MS Degrees in Health, Physical Education and Recreation, from Mississippi State University in 1971 and 1972 respectively. From 1972 until 1979, Julian taught and coached in the public school system in the State of Mississippi.

Louise Mahar is beginning her seventeenth year as Assistant Director of Recreational Sports for Fitness at SUNY Cortland. Prior to that, Louise was the Recreation and Fitness Director at Johnson State College in Johnson, Vermont for six years. She earned a BS Degree in Health Science at Johnson State College and an MS Degree in Exercise Physiology/Fitness from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville.

Matt Nuesell is beginning his fifth year as the Assistant Director of Recreational Sports for Intramural Sports and Sport Clubs. For the two years prior to his appointment, Matt worked as the Graduate Assistant for Sport Clubs at SUNY Cortland while earning a Masters degree in Environmental and Outdoor Education. Matt earned his first Masters degree in Exercise Science with a concentration in Sport Psychology from Ithaca College in 2003 while completing a graduate assistantship in athletic training at Cornell University. He earned his BS in Athletic Training from SUNY Cortland in the spring of 2001.

Ali is currently beginning her second year in the Recreational Sports Department as the Graduate Assistant for Facilities & Aquatics.

Officers President-Michael Giardino

Michael has been a part of the club baseball team for all four years. He became the club president as a junior hoping to rebuild a team that lost their whole starting lineup from the previous year. The team went 7-9 in a rebuilding year, now as a senior, SUNY Cortland looks to be a dominant force in their division. Michael is also the coach for the club hockey team at SUNY Cortland and is passionate about what he does and gives his team 100% all the time.

Vice President-Timothy Popko

Tim has also has been a big part of the Cortland State club baseball team; this is his fourth year on the team. As a sophomore Tim became the team secretary and has moved up to vice president for the remaining two years. Timothy is a hardnosed player, he leaves everything he has on the field and is a definite leader on the team. He is motivated to better the team in anyway and has the determination to do so.

Officers Treasurer-Stephen Graf

Stephen is a junior from Garden City Park, NY; he has played a major role the last two years on the team. As a sophomore Stephen was the team secretary helping out the team wherever he could, now as a junior has stepped up as treasurer and is next in line to be president. As the starting short-stop he brings a positive attitude for everyone on the team and definitely makes his presence on the field known.

Secretary-Evan Paliotta

This is Evans first year as an officer. He is a sophomore from Rockland, NY and is a dominant starting pitcher. As a freshman Evan won player of the week pitching a 1 hitter against the 2011 NCBA national champions, University of Massachusetts. As secretary his role is to keep all the statistics up to date along with updating the website with recent news. Evan is and will remain to be a big part of the team as long as he is attending Cortland.

Kyle Andersen #4 Junior Physical Education First Base, Pitcher Deer Park, NY This is Kyles first year on SUNY Cortland club baseball; he brings a dominant force to the Cortland lineup as the clean-up hitter. Previously, Kyle played two years on the varsity team and looks to be a great addition for the club team. Steve Carr #22 Freshman Physical Education Outfield Northport, NY Steve attended Northport high school and was a captain of his varsity team his senior year. As a freshman he brings solid defense and good knowledge for the game.

Andrew Crimmins #14

Cody Chambers #2 Junior Business Economics Second Base Unadilla, NY This is Codys first year at SUNY Cortland, and first year on the club baseball team. He transferred from SUNY IT where he played Varsity, starting in right field both years. Cody also played football and basketball in High School where he earned the title of MVP as the starting point guard. Cody brings a big bat to the lineup and footwork like no other.

Freshman Business Economics Second Base Middle Village, NY Andrew brings a very good set of hands to the team this year, along with a very strong arm. He will probably get a good amount of playing time since our starting second basemen is a senior.

Junior Physical Education Pitcher Darien Center, NY Luke is a strong force out of the bullpen. As a lefty Luke has a dominant arm and knows how to pitch his way through a game. As a junior he has two more seasonss to show the league his talents.

Jason Dalton #5 Junior Sport Management Pitcher Geneva, NY Jason has been on the club team since winter break last year. He has proven to be a strong arm out of the bullpen and can throw 2-3 innings whenever needed. He really proved himself last season when he shut down the University of Connecticut for two full innings, giving up no hits or runs. Justin DAngelo #37 Junior Physical Education Outfield/Pitcher Oceanside, NY Justin has been on club baseball since the fall of last season. He made the team as a pitcher but has proven to be a good utility player. Justin moved to left field and his glove is golden. He is a steady hitter as well. Joe DeRuvo #18 Senior Business Economics Pitcher Bay Shore, NY Joe has been on the team since freshman year. He has proven to be a veteran pitcher and is always willing to help the newcomers. He has always been solid on the mound, winning Pitcher of the Week several times. Joe hopes to get a job in the business field when he graduates.

John made the team sophomore year and has been dominant ever since. He is a crafty left-hander with a looping curve and an unhittable change-up. John will be a key performer for this season and next.

Cody Komenda #30 Junior Sport Management Catcher Oneonta, NY Cody made the team the winter of his freshman year. He brings quickness and a strong arm to the plate, as well as a consistent bat. He is a hard worker and always willing to get better. After Cody graduates he hopes to work in Minor League Baseball.

Brandon Losee #23 Senior Business Economics Third Base Glen Head, NY Brandon made the team the winter of his sophomore year. He was originally a relief pitcher but made the switch to the hot corner when we lost our starting third basemen. He has quick feet in the field and can snag almost any ball that comes his way. Chris Matteo #20 Sophomore Physical Education Outfield Albertson, NY Chris is a first year player on the Club team. He weilds a good bat, and for being a rookie, he has established himself as a important part of the lineup. Chris will definitely be a good leader in the few years to come. Ryan Panaro #7 Junior Criminal Justice Third Charlestown, MA Ryan has been on the team since freshman year. He has held a steady batting average all three seasons and continues to cause problems for pitchers because of his small size. Ryan was the treasurer but recently had to step down. Rob Maloney #1 Senior Physical Education Outfield Mineola, NY Rob made the team his junior year. He is a great asset to the team bringing a very high level of charisma and talent to the club. He is an all-star in the outfield, covering a lot of real estate with his good glove. His position will be a tough one to fill when he leaves. Evan Paliotta #8 Sophomore History Pitcher Rockland, NY Evan has been one of our best pitchers ever since he made the team his freshman year. He fell into the treasurer position by chance and has done a good job. When he is a senior, he is expected to be President, and run a good club. Dan Russo #33 Senior Physical Education First Shirley, NY Dan has been a solid pick up at first base for the past two seasons. He is a good back up and we can always count on him when he gets put into the game. Last season, Dan also came in clutch with many pinch hit appearances.

Danny Schulman #? Freshman Sport Management Shortstop Pleasantville, NY Danny is a first year player but he was one of the few that stood out in fall tryouts. He has great fielding skills and a quick bat. In the future, he is going to be the starting shortstop once Steve Graf leaves the diamond.

Pat Tierney #? Junior Physical Education Catcher Poughkeepsie, NY Pat transferred from Dutchess Community College this year and it is his first year on the club team. Pat became the third catcher behind Weber and Komenda and also has a pretty consistent approach at the plate. He was a solid addition to the team this year. Mike Weber #29 Senior Physical Education Catcher Middle Village, NY Mikes first year at SUNY Cortland he played Varsity baseball as a second string catcher. He then took a few years off and tried out for the club team in 2011. He has been a brick wall behind the plate and he a great arm so not many people try and steal on him. He is one of the most valued players on the team by far. James Wegge #? Junior Exercise Science Pitcher Miller Place, NY James made the team this year as a pitcher. He has been our #2 starter during the fall season. He has a looping curve and a change-up that will fool almost any hitter. He always goes deep into the game and gives his team a great chance to win every time he is on the mound.

Junior History Pitcher Congers, NY This is Andrews first year on the team. He has made one appearance so far in a relief effort. His stature on the mound is very solid and he always looks comfortable. Whenever we need a few innings to be put in the books, he is a good player to call upon.

Evan Yacowenia #? Junior Education Third Burnt Hills, NY Evan transferred to SUNY Cortland this year as Junior from Mohawk Valley Community College where he played Varsity baseball. He usually gives us one solid game per series at third base with his cannon of an arm. He also adds a lot of fire power to our lineup.

Jason Yip #? Senior Physical Education Pitcher Mineola, NY

Jason Yip played Varsity baseball his freshman year at Cortland. He stopped playing all together his sophomore year and then made the Club team his junior year, but only playing the fall semester. He came back this year and has been our #1 starter this fall season. He has fastball that reaches the lower 90s and a curve that breaks straight from twelve to six o clock. We are looking for him to lead us to our next NCBA division title.

About SUNY Cortland

Located atop one of the rolling hills in central New Yorks City of Seven Valleys, the State University of New York College at Cortland was founded in 1868 as the Cortland Normal School, which included among its earliest students inventor and industrialist Elmer A. Sperry of Sperry-Rand Corp. fame. Over the decades, the campus expanded and in 1941, by an act of legislature and the Board of Regents, the institution officially became a four-year college providing courses leading to the bachelors degree. In 1948, Cortland was a founding member of the State University of New York. Today, approximately 7,500 students are pursuing degrees within the Colleges three academic divisions arts and sciences, professional studies and the school of education. Twenty-three departments with a faculty of more than 400 offer the SUNY Cortland student body 70 majors and 44 minors from which to choose. The Colleges main campus covers 191 acres and includes 31 traditional and modern buildings. Fifteen of these structures are residence halls providing on-campus housing for approximately 3,000 students. Cortland also operates its Outdoor Education Center at Raquette Lake in the Adirondacks, the Hoxie Gorge Nature Preserve outside Cortland, and the Brauer Memorial Geological Field Station on the Helderberg Escarpment near Albany. At Cortland, athletics are viewed as having an important role in the educational mission of the College. During the fall, winter and spring seasons, Cortland participates in 25 intercollegiate sports 14 womens and 11 mens in an attempt to provide a broad program which meets the needs, interests and abilities of its students. The College offers its student-athletes excellent athletic facilities. The on-campus stadium features two artificial turf fields. One field seats 6,500 spectators, the other 1,500. The Cortland football, field hockey, mens and womens lacrosse and mens and womens track and field teams are among those who utilize the facility, which the New York Times called ...a new stadium worthy of a major university power. The Bessie L. Park Physical Education and Recreation Center, opened in 1973, features the Whitney T. Corey Gymnasium with a 3,500 seating capacity; the Olympic-sized Harriet Holsten swimming pool with gallery seating for 1,500; the Alumni Ice Arena, a facility which can accommodate 2,500 spectators; a 500-seat gymnastics arena, racquetball and squash courts, a wrestling room, modern athletic training facilities and the state-of-the-art Francis Woods Fitness Facility. Nearby Clayton R. Lusk Field House, with its tartan-textured surface, is home for the indoor track teams, varsity practice sessions and recreational activities. Cortlands soccer teams play on T. Fred Prof Holloway Field, which has lights for night contests and newly installed bleachers. The College also has 22 outdoor tennis courts and two outdoor basketball courts and boasts Robert H. Wallace Field (baseball) and Dragon Field (softball) as part of its 51 acres of athletic fields.

Beaudry Park The SUNY Cortland Club Baseball team plays all of their scheduled home games at Beaudry Park, Beaudry Park is a community park used for many activities such as softball, baseball, summer recreation programs, and also for a convenient and relaxing picnic area. Beaudry Park is located on Scammel St. right off Owego St., It is open from 6:00 am till 10:30 pm. The park features a small sheltered picnic area, a playground, a wading pool, baseball fields, multiple softball fields and 2 basketball courts. The park also has an indoor facility where visitor can play pool, table tennis, and foosball. Beaudry is a great asset to the Cortland Community; the park allows both college students and residents of Cortland to unite. (Free Admission)
